He is best known for his novel "Lord of the Flies", which won him the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1954. Golding went to Brasenose College, Oxford where he initially studied natural sciences before transferring to English literature. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Golding died in 1993 at the age of 81 from heart failure in his home in Cornwall.
