Upon Hernan Cortes's arrival, King Moctezuma seemed welcoming as he greeted Hernan Cortes
with two hundred lords. There was a a little sense of fear as Hernan Cortes tried to embrace the
king but was stopped by two lords so that Hernan Cortes does not touch the king and later
performed the ceremony of kissing the earth. King Moctezuma and Hernan Cortes exchanged
necklaces as if they were friends. King Moctezuma does not act superior in front of Hernan
Cortes, but instead he addresses them as lords. "We shall obey you and hold you as our lord in
place of that great soverigen of whom you speak."

King Moctezuma understands, through the writing from their ancestors, that he himself and his
people were not originally natives but foreigners. King Moctezuma describes how a chieftain
brought their people into the region, in which after returning to his native land and coming back
attempting to lead those who were left in that region as chieftain, left him with disappointment
because no one wanted to follow him. This led to King Moctezuma and his people believing that
anyone related to the chieftain would come back and try to conquer the region. After hearing a
lot of great stories from Hernan Cortes, King Moctezuma was led to believe that Hernan Cortes's
king was their own natural king.

King Moctezuma seems as if he values equality because of the fact that he did not see himself
superior to Hernan Cortes. He also knew that other tribes such as the Cempoal and Tascalteca
were talking evil about him but he insisted that Hernan Cortes to "believe only what you see with
your eyes, for those are my enemies." King Moctezuma also showed that he himself and Hernan
Cortes were not different in regards to appearances and mortality in which we can seethat he
values equality and respect.
