Viruses: Ebola (9/25/2014)

Class: General Biology

Grade Level: 9-12
Unit: Cells
Teacher: Mr. Matt Nelson & Mr. Matt Kass
Objectives
The student will be able to:
Use QAR as an effective strategy to be able to understand questions and where to
find their answers
Identify Ebola and understand where the virus might be originating from
Essential Question
Where does Ebola come from, and why do we think that?
Anticipatory Set 7 minutes
Students will view a short video on a few misnomers about the Ebola virus. It will be
shown twice, the first time students will just watch. The second time they will write down
any new things they learned from the movie about Ebola. These might be used as an
entrance slip to be turned in with bell work.
Teaching: Activities 18 minutes
Introduction of QAR (lecture) 3 minutes
The students will be given figure 5.4 from the textbook and each quadrant will be
explained quickly by the teacher(s).
Practice Activity 5 minutes
Students will be given a work sheet wherein they must read a short article. They are then
given a few questions about the article that they must classify within the QAR system.
They must also identify where they would find the answer to the question (in text in one
sentence.etc.). While this is happening notes from yesterday will be passed back to
students.
Article: QAR Practice 10 minutes
Students will be tasked to read an article in pairs (neighbors is fine for pairings) about
recent findings in possible Ebola reservoirs. They will then use the QAR template and
come up with at least one question and its answer from the article for each of the four
types of questions (1 right there, 1 think and search, 1 author and you, & 1 on your own).
This will be modeled by the teacher a few times. Teachers will be walking around and
assisting in the question making process. They will also make note of four good question
examples from each type.

Closure 5 minutes
Question check 4 minutes
The four selected questions will be asked by the students that created them. Individuals
will then be called on to answer one of the following three questions: Which question
type is being used? Where would you find the answer/which resource? Answer to the
question? The rest of the class should give feedback in the form of thumbs up/down,
based on whether they agree with the student or not.
Exit slip 1 minute
In order to leave class students must write down a summary of what they learned about
where Ebola comes from.
