    Whatiftherewerenonaturaloceanwaves?Toanswerthisquestionwehavetoaskis
    thisevenpossible?Inourworldtoday,thiswouldneverbepossible.Inorderfortheretobe
    absolutelynowaves,therewouldhavetobenowind,nomoon,nogravitationalpull,andno
    naturaldisasterssuchashurricanes,earthquakesandseverestorms.Wavesarecausedbyallof
    thesefactors.Thefrictionofwindofthewaterssurfacecanstartripplesthatgetbiggerand
    eventuallyturnintowaves.Themoonpullstheocean'stidesandwhenitdoesso,itcancreate
    newwaves.Itworksthesamewithgravitationalpull.Finally,hurricanes,earthquakes,and
    severestormscancausemovementintheoceanthatcreateswaves.Eventhoughweliveina
    worldthatcan'teliminateallofthesefactors,wecanpredicttheoutcomesofwhataworld
    withoutwaveswouldlooklike.
    Oneofthemostimportantjobswaveshaveistooxygenatewater.Withoutwaves,
    animalsunderthesurfacewouldntgetoxygen,whichisessentialfortheirsurvival.Most
    animalsundertheseadontneedtocomeupforairbecausetheyhavegills.Gillshelpfishand
    otheranimalsthatliveinwaterabsorbsmallerconcentrationsofoxygenthathumansandland
    animalscantwithlungs.Iftherewerenowavestooxygenatethewater,fishandotheranimals
    wouldntbeabletotransferoxygenintoenergy.Iftheycanttransferoxygenintoenergy,they
    cantsurvivebeneaththesurface.


    Anotherimportantjobwaveshaveistocreatebeaches.Withoutwaves,therewouldntbe
    agradualramptolandlikethereistoday.Ifthewaterwasjuststillitwouldnevererodethe
    landaroundittocreatebeaches.Beachesalsocreatehomesformanyanimals.Animalslike
    crabs,smallfish,shrimp,seasnailsandbivalvesliveonbeachesbecauseoftheshallowerwater.
    Birdslikeseagullsandpelicansusebeachestosearchforfoodbecausetheycaneasilyspottheir
    preyinthethinwater.Iftherewerenowaves,
    Itsimpossiblefortheretobenowavesatall.Eveniftherewasnowind,nomoon,no
    severeweatherstorms,andnoearthquakes,therewouldstillbemovementunderthewaters
    surfaceandimpactontothewaterthatwouldcreatewaves.Therewouldstillbeflowingwater
    andmovingboatsthatcouldstartwaves.Eventhoughwewillneverknowwhataworldwithout
    waveslookslike,wecanattempttopredictwhattheoutcomewouldbe.Evenifthepredictions
    arentcorrect,onethingwecanknowforsureisthataworldwithoutwaveswouldbevery
    differentfromourworldtoday.
