The Rotary Club of Dougherty Valley/San Ramon

Meeting Minutes
February 3, 2010

I. Welcome & Socializing - 5:30pm

II. Call to Order by Bill Clarkson at 5:49pm in Library of Dougherty


Valley High School
a. Pledge of Allegiance – Led by Patty Hoyt
b. Patty Hoyt was our greeter this week. Every week there will be a new
greeter who brings a small gift (usually an inspirational lesson) for the
group and welcomes attendees as they arrive. This week, Patty presented
us with “Lessons from the Geese”, a story that very closely illustrates the
purpose and dynamic of our Rotary Club. Thank you Patty.
c. Introduced visiting Rotarians: Mark von Hoetzendorff (San Ramon), Jim
Walberg (Danville/Sycamore Valley), and Bill Harlan (Danville/Sycamore
Valley)
d. New DV Attendees introduced themselves

III. Announcements/Upcoming Events


a. Deepa Willingham as the Program Speaker on March 24th at the San
Ramon Church (Alcosta Blvd).
6:30pm – Social
7:00pm – Program
Our Rotary Club is hosting this event; Peter Adiani will be assisting
with organizing. We are welcoming six Rotary clubs and Interact students
(estimated 300-350 attendees). If anyone would like to be on this
committee, contact Peter or Bill.
Forecasts: $1200 budget ($450 to rent the hall)

IV. Introduction and Updates from Club Officers/Directors


a. Community Service Director – Esther Lucas – will be coordinating service
projects for our club
b. Secretary – Chandni Adiani – takes minutes and creates newsletters
c. Treasurer – Jane Louie – collects dues (only $140 annually); Food
provided by “Thymes to Eat”, $5 per week if you are going to be eating
d. Club Administration – Kimberly Nicola – Members’ Night Out: Rotarian
hosts about 3 other Rotarians and their significant others for an evening of
fun and quality time. We will begin coordinating at the next meeting with
sign-up sheets and Rotarians will be matched up. Typically done in a
potluck manner.
e. Membership – Chris Phillips – Working on the Member Roster with Chip;
they’ve got a sample from SR Rotary (may or may not adopt the format).
Will be gathering information for a DV Rotary Club Roster and Chip will
send a link so every member can input our information on the Rotary
website, and even upload a picture!
f. Program Speaker Chair – Rick Barroro – We have a line-up for weekly
speakers all the way through June 9th! If you have a suggestion for a
program speaker, contact Rick.
g. Social Media – Nicole Blazin – Developed a budget for our website ($100-
$110). No coding necessary with WordPress (additional $90) for a total of
$200 to set up our very own website. Also, fantastic job on creating our
Facebook Fan Page!

V. Housekeeping
a. We’ve found a permanent location!
San Ramon Community Center at the Central Park in San Ramon
(bottom of Bollinger Canyon Road)

VI. Recognition
a. Nicole Blazin for a $5 recognition: “Cake Boss” at Crab Feed on Saturday
night. Nicole made a cake that was like the glasshouse (45 pounds!) bid for
$110!
b. Denise Hibbard for a $5 recognition: Thank you for hosting us at your
school’s library these past few weeks! Congrats to her Wildcats for ranking
3rd for Women’s Basketball in the East Bay (and there are no seniors on
the team!)

VII. Program Speaker: Mark von Hoetzendorff


• 26 years in Rotary, started in Chico, transferred in 1988 to San Ramon
• Served as President of San Ramon Rotary, 1994-1995
• Charter member of District 5160
• District Governor, 2002-2003
• Instructor at PETS (President Elect Training)
• Has made 2 trips to Africa and come back with many stories: “The More
You Look, The More You See” presentation of his experiences
• Just returned in January 2010 from Mexico where he delivered 650
wheelchairs
Thank you Mark for an insightful and inspirational presentation on your
participation in the Polio Plus Program in Africa!
