Central claim/ideas
The draft has a clear central claim that is narrow enough to be manageable, but
complex enough to be interesting.

The central claim successfully moves beyond source texts and explains where/why
those texts fall short. It is clear that the writer is not just repeating what they have read
previously.

Development of the discussion

The draft adequately develops the discussion of the central claim. Ideas clearly and
thoroughly explained and analyzed.
The writing maintains a clear focus, and avoids getting off topic. The chain of
reasoning / logical flow of ideas is clear.

X
X

The draft has a balance of claims, evidence, and analysis. All claims backed up with
sufficient evidence and analysis so that the writer avoids jumping from claim to claim.

Knowledge and Use of Texts

The choice and variety of evidence is convincing.

Sources are used thoughtfully and intentionally. It is clear that all sources are excellent
choices for the project.

Sufficient background information about each source is provided without relying too
heavily on summary.

Style
The writing is academic in nature, moving beyond simple persuasion and surface-level
analysis. Writing may show exceptional creativity, control of voice, and/or quality.

The writing maintains a sophisticated tone, appropriate to an academic audience.

Writing is organized in a clear, logical way. Clear connections between ideas are
present both within and between paragraphs.

The writer uses correct and appropriate grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.

MLA Citations (both in-text and works cited) are present and correct
