FirstOppositionSpeakerDebateArgument:

Goodmorning!IamCarissaandIwillberepresentingtheoppositionsideinthis
debate.WebelievethatthegovernmentinYemenisnotmorestableduetotherevolution.
AlthoughMarcusmadesomevalidpointsabouthowthegovernmenthasimproved,thereare
stillmanyissuestobedealtwith.TheHouthisandpeopleofYemenbegantoprotestagainst
theYemenigovernmentin2011becausetheywantedfreshelectoralpollsandmore
representation.TensofthousandsofYemenipeopleparticipatedintheprotestsagainstthe
president,AliAbdullahSaleh,whohadbeeninofficefor33years.Inordertomakethe
governmentmorestable,thepeoplewantedtoendunemployment,improveeconomic
conditions,andeliminatecorruptionwithinthegovernment.
MarcusmadethepointthattheYemenigovernmenthasbeenabletoimprovefrom
pooreconomicconditions.Althoughthepresidenthassecuredsomebanksandtrustfunds,
Yemenstillhasastruggling,underdevelopedeconomy.ThepeopleofYemenarefacing
deterioratingsecurity,shortagesinfuelandelectricityandrisingcostoflivingintheArab
world'spoorestcountry.Also,Yemen'sbudgetdeficitreached8%ofGDPin2013whilethe
country'sstockofforeigncurrencyfellbyabout$1billiontojustunder$4billion.So,Iwould
liketoarguethatifanything,Yemen'seconomicsituationhasonlygottenworse,notbetter.
Asaresult,Yemencontinuestofacefoodinsecurity,impoverishment,andinstability.
Marcusmentionedthatthenewpresident,MansourHadi,hasprotectedthecountry
fromtheAlQaeda,butthedeadliestattackinYemen'shistoryoccurredwhileHadiwasin
office.OnMay21,2012,anAlQaedasoldierdetonatedasuicidebombinacrowdofmilitary
personnelinthecountry'scapital.Theattackkilled96andwoundedmorethan200Yemeni
people.Justthisyear,theAlQaedahaskilledover60Yemenis.So,howdoesthisprovethat
thenewpresidenthasprotectedYemen?Inaddition,withnorealreformofgovernment
institutions,noruleoflaw,deterioratingeconomyandacatastrophichumanitariansituation,
conflictsthroughoutYemenhavedramaticallyincreasedasthepeoplebecomeincreasingly
unsatisfiedwiththegovernment.
Next,IwouldliketorebutthepointMarcusmadeabouthowtherevolutionhas
resultedinthedevelopmentofdemocracyinYemen,becausefrommypointofviewitseems
thatthegovernmentisvirtuallythesame.Theoldvicepresident,MansourHadi,wasplaced
inpowerbytheGulfCooperationCouncil'spowertransferagreement.Thisdeal,signedon

towardsamoredemocraticelectionsystem,butthatstillhasn'tbeenachieved.Therewasan

AnotherpointIwanttomakeisthattheHouthisarestillunhappywiththenew

Yemen.TheHouthisfoughtforachange,butthestructureofthegovernmentbarelychanged
aftertheoverthrowoftheformerpresident,whichiswhytheyarestillunhappy.
Tosummarize,thegovernmenthasn'timprovedtobalancethecountry,theeconomy
