How will you teach historical content?

It is my belief that the study of history is crucially important to every single generation.
As an educator it will be my job to ensure that my students gain a full and thorough
understanding of the historical events and people that have influenced all of our lives. History is
the story of everyone, and history is therefore relevant to everyone. I believe that every single
one of my students has a vested interest in understanding what has had influence on their lives,
the lives of their families, and the lives of their people. It is for this reason that I will keep my
students interested in historical inquiry by trying to show how every group and culture has had
an important influence on history. As an educator I can expect to be teaching a class with kids
from a number of different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, knowing this makes it even
more important to show how many peoples and cultures have contributed to history. Their
contributions have created the world as we know it today.
How will you bring geography into the class?
The inclusion of geographical studies is also very important when seeking to gain a full
understanding of history. Geography itself has been very important throughout history. The
physical geography of the world has served different functions to different peoples and cultures.
Sometimes the geography of the land can be a barrier, other times it is a means of access. This
types of distinctions have been very important throughout history. One cannot teach the history
of Rome without describing its important geographical features such as its central location on the
Mediterranean. One cannot tell the history of Egypt without talking about the continuous floods
of the Nile River, which led to its prosperous longevity. An understanding of geography is very
important for developing an understanding of history. In my class I will constantly be pushing
my students to think about how geography was important in the historical context. How did the
lands people lived on affect their habitation, expansion, trade, rise and decline?
