Technology To Go: The Evolution of Mobile Communication
Mobile computing A device that is portable and capable of wireless communication
WiFi Wireless Fidelity, allows computing devices to access the internet
WAP Wireless Access Point, passes data along to the local network
PDA Personal Digital Assistant, handhelds that used to be for storing phone
numbers but have recently become mini computers
Why are mobile computing devices so popular? They are small and easy to carry

What are some of the difference/advantages/disadvantages between web-based
email and an e-mail software that can be installed on your computer?
Using online email, you can send an email to anyone who has an online email. Using
an email software, you can only send that to anyone who has the same software.

Networks
LAN Local Area Network, smallest possible network

Intranet a private network, a bit bigger than a LAN, that you need a password to
access

WAN Wide Area Network, large type of network that can have many computers
attached to it

Internet the largest WAN, somewhere between 350 and 500 million computers

WWW World Wide Web, the part of the internet that contains webpages

Webpage a single web document that includes text, links, pictures and other
multimedia

Website a collection of webpages, usually maintained by the same


person/organization

Web Browser a software application that transforms information into webpages
