CCSS Mathematical Practices + 21st Century Skills = Student Success

Goal of PD: To help teachers identify and align the CCSS Mathematical
Practices
and 21st Century Skills to their grade level CCSS for mathematics.
Time

Task
Goals:

Goal 1: Teachers will work together to identify 21st Century Skills.

Goal 2: Teachers will work together to identify Mathematical Practices.
Goal 3: Teachers will examine the three math standards (K-3, 4-7, Alg) and
identify which 21st Century Skills and Mathematical Practice apply to each.
Goal 4: Teachers will create five essential questions using the skills they
have developed and post them to a common document using Google Docs,
so they will have a wealth of question to refer to during a lesson.
Goal 5: Teachers will examine and choose at least two of the California
Common Core Standards for their grade level and identify which practices
and skills apply to each standard.
Goal 6: Discuss the progression and impact of implementing the Next
Generation of Science Standards (if time allows)

Using doc camera - display three math standards (K-3, 4-7, Alg) for all teachers to see and use
for this activity.
Goal 3: Teacher will examine the three Math standards on the overhead and determine which
21st Century Skills and Mathematical Practices apply to each.

Goal 6: Discuss the importance of daily implementation of NGSS for all grade levels.
Students are tested in grades 5, 8, and 10. There is a prescribed progression of knowledge that
is supposed to built up over time. Excluding any grade level leaves gaps in foundational
