INTRODUCTION

1.1

Background of studies

A car spoiler plays a major role in any automotive industry. Every vehicle has
spoiler attach at the rear of the car. Many decades back, spoiler wasnt a major part
of the car and it was not given a proper attention since those days car were only
used for transportation purpose, technologies and knowledge were also limited.
Early 80s, car manufacturers start to understand the importance of spoiler in a car.
Later then, more attention was given to car spoiler and the benefits of installing it to
the rear of car.
Car spoiler was given more attention on race car at the beginning since it
plays major role in increasing aerodynamics and reducing drag. This made race car
manufacturer to pay special attention to them. Designing and customizing new
design up spoiler and testing them in wind tunnel to ensure the spoiler give proper
efficiency. Car spoiler also improvises the stability of car during straight line
speeding and cornering. Spoiler basically reduces the lift of the car by providing
massive down force to ensure the car sticks to the road at sudden change of
direction.
Commercial car manufacturers are now implementing this technologies on
commercial cars, since fuel consumption is plays a major role for every car
manufacturer, spoiler helps them to provide better aerodynamics and reduces drag
of a the car. This factor contributes in decreasing the fuel consumption of a car.

Problem statement

1.2.1 Disturbed Aerodynamics

During the manufacturing process of any car, the manufacturer does a

considerable amount of research on its design. The lines and curves that we see on
the car all complement its aerodynamics. However, installing an aftermarket spoiler
on a car that didnt come with one will disturb the aerodynamics. This is because
you or the body shop that installed the spoiler does not have any way of checking
the aerodynamics.
1.2.2 Sever Drag

Adding spoilers is never convenient for daily driven cars. Even if it is installed
correctly, it will cause severe drag at the rear end of the car. It will be exactly like
loading heavy bricks in your cars trunk. On a performance engine, this change is
not significant because of the engine power. However, on a regular car, this can
place more stress on the engine.
1.2.3 Increased Gas Mileage

Since the rear end drag is increased, your cars engine will be under greater
stress. Undue stress can damage the working of your engine and require premature
repairs. But even if all odds are in your favor you will end up paying for more gas.
This is because the extra drag created by the spoiler will cause the engine to work
harder. As a result it will consume more gas. A spoiler has a significant negative
impact on the gas mileage of a car. Race car owners do not worry about the gas
mileage as long as their car is performing well. But a spoiler on a regular car will
increase your gas expenditure.
There are many other upgrades for daily driven cars that will increase its efficiency.
But a spoiler just isnt one of those upgrades.
