Papaya!

A film entitled Nurturing the Seeds of Cooperation: The Papaya Network of

Southeast Asia presented by ISAAA is a 17-minute video that documents the
collaborative efforts of various stakeholders and partners to develop a new variety of
papaya. It highlights public-private partnerships and how countries in Southeast Asia
benefited from it.

For countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan and Philippines, Papaya
is one of the most useful and important fruit crop. It is used by people of all social
standing may it be rich or poor. Farmers though have a big problem in producing
Papaya because of PRSV and the fast-ripening of the fruit.

It was showed in the film that they tried to engineer the DNA of a Papaya to
produce PRSV-resistance and to prolong its ripening. The experiment was indeed a
success. Moreover, it was not only the product that was made successful but also the
partnerships between countries, public and private, and the sharing of knowledge from
the experience they acquired.

I learned form the movie too, that genetic engineering doesn't always have to end
up as a bad science but also a useful one too.
