Tutorial 1: Loading and Section classification
1. Consider the floor plan shown in Figure 1(i) where three one way spanning slabs
are supported on beams AC, GH, BD, CD and EF. The floor area supported by
each beam is indicated in Figure 1(ii). The beam GH is a secondary beam
spanning between beams AB and CD. The slabs are carrying a uniformly
distributed loads w kN/m2. The unfactored design loads (w) are 1kN/m 2 for the
dead load 3kN/m2 for the imposed load. Assume the beams are simply supported.
(a) Calculate the factored design loads (uniformly distributed loads) on all
beams
(b) Calculate the maximum design bending moment of beams AB, EF and
CD.
(Hint: The load carried by the secondary beam imposes a concentrated load at
the mid-span position of beams AB and CD)

2. A hot-finished structural Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) of 450 x 200 x 10

mm rolled from Steel Grade S 275 is shown in Figure 2. Where D = 450 mm, B =
200 mm and t = 10 mm. Classify the section into Plastic, Compact, Semi-compact
or Slender according to BS 5950-1
(a) Bending about the major axis.
(b) Section subjected to pure compression.
