Situation No. 1

Determine the amount of dead load that could be carried by girder

ABCD with the following properties. Refer to Figure 1.

✔Slabs and beams are made of reinforced concrete with a unit weight
equal to 24 kN/m3.

✔Thickness of the slab is equal to 150mm.

✔Consider B3 as floor beams that will transfer loads to girder ABCD.

✔A parapet wall with the height equal to 1.5m and a thickness equal to
100mm is running from point A to D.

✔The parapet wall is made of bricks with a unit weight equal to 8kN/m3.

Situation No. 2

2.1 The floor system of an apartment building consist of a

4-inch thick reinforced concrete slab resting on a three steel
beams, which in turn are supported by two steel girders as
shown in Figure 2. The areas of the cross section of the floor
beams and girders are 18.3 in2 and 32.7 in2 respectively.
Determine the dead loads at beam CD and girder AE.

2.2 For the apartment building whose floor system was

described in Figure 2, determine the live loads acting on the
beam CD and girder AE. For hospital patient rooms,
residential dwellings apartment hotel guests rooms, school
classroom, the minimum live load is 40lb/ft.

Situation No. 3

3.1 The roof system of an office building consists of a 4-in

thick reinforced concrete slab resting on four steel beams
A=16.2 in2 which are supported by two steel girders A=42.19
in2. The girders in turn are supported by four columns as
shown in Figure 3. Determine the deadloads acting on the
girder AG.

3.2 The roof of the office building in Figure 3 is subjected to a

live load (LL) of 20 psf. Determine the LL acting on the beam
EF, the girder AG and the column A.
