Design Criteria of a Three-storey Studio type Apartment

I. Description of the Structure:

A Fort-five by Eighteen meters Three-Storey studio type Apartment Building having
twenty-four 8m x 7.625m studio type rooms and a comfort room (3m x 2m) in each rooms
and Eight laundry area in each floor, with a roof-deck that can be used as an assembly
area. Figures present both the structural and architectural plans for the structure. A
summary of the functional requirements is given below.

ROOF DECK:
Usage: Assembly Area
Framing: Reinforced Concrete Slab and Girder
Flooring: Concrete finish
2 and 3rd Floor (Typical):
nd

Usage: Studio type apartments and eight laundry areas

II. Structural Design Criteria:

The following sections presents the design criteria, structural, idealization, and
analytic procedures and methods use in the structural design of the building. The design
criteria include the codes and specifications, materials, strengths, and loading deemed
applicable for this structure.

Code and Specifications

The following structural codes and specifications were used in the design of the
building:
a. National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2010 Vol. 1, Buildings,
Towers, and Other Vertical Structures, NSCP C101-10
b. National Building Code of the Philippines (PD 1096)

Materials Strengths
The following material strength used in the structural investigation of the
building was based primarily on American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM) standard specifications:
a. Concrete – minimum concrete compressive strength of concrete at 28-days
for Structural elements; fc’ = 27 MPa
b. Reinforcing Steel – rebar shall have a tensile strength of f y = 276 MPa
(Grade 60) for slabs, beams, columns and footings.
c. Soil Allowable Bearing Pressure or Capacity. qa= 150 MPa.
Loads
Design loads and forces are those resulting from dead load and live load acting
in the most critical combination using the appropriate load factors
recommended by the governing code. The basic load types and their
corresponding magnitudes are taken as follows:

a. Dead loads
Dead loads include the weight of the structure and all the materials and
equipment which are permanently fastened to the frame and supported
thereby

Materials/Components Unit Weights/Loads

Concrete 23.54 kN/m3

Ceiling 0.24 kPa
Floor Finish 1.53 kpa
Tiles 0.77kPa

b. Live loads
The live loads include loads which vary in magnitude and/or distribute
during the life of structure. The minimum values of these loads depend on
the occupancy and normally specified by the governing building code.

Materials/Components Unit Weights/Loads

Residential floor area 1.9 kpa

VI. Load Combination

Reinforced concrete sections shall be designed using the “strength design
method” of the ACI 318-89. Using the load factors and critical load
combination from the following:
U = 1.3DL + 1.1LL + 1.1EL
