1. Foreword:
This report forms the basis of the structural design process, by familiarizing with the
requirements of the project. This report aims at formulating the design parameters that has
been adopted in developing the structural analysis, design and detailing work of the building.
The design will be compatible with the architectural theme, satisfy the functional needs
adhering to other applicable building norms and Indian Standards’ provisions to achieve safe,
stable, strong yet optimally economical structure.

This report covers the minimum design requirements to establish the overall design philosophy
being adopted in the structural design of the proposed building.

The design will aim to achieve:

 Structural and functional integrity,
 Desirable structural performance under characteristic service design loads,
 Resistance to loads due to natural phenomena like wind, earthquakes and
 Structural durability and maintainability.

3. Analytical/ Design Approach:

Numerical Model:
 A comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) analysis of skeletal members interconnected
by rigid diaphragm at each floor level and fixed at foundation level shall be carried out
with ETABS software Non-linear version.

 Beams and columns shall be modelled as frame element, two way slabs as membrane.

 Buildings shall be assessed for a combination of gravity, seismic & wind loads and
detailed appropriately.

 For the design of various structural elements like foundations, columns, beams, slab,
walls etc. in-house developed spreadsheets will be used wherever applicable.

Design Philosophy:
Design of the RCC structure shall be carried out by limit state method conforming to IS: 456-
2000. Design of all the structural elements of the structure shall be based on its 3D analysis-
results. Individual member-section of this space (3D) frame structure shall be designed for
the section forces generated under various load combinations. Dynamic Analysis shall be
carried out by Response Spectrum Method. The design base shear values obtained shall be
enhanced to the calculated base shear value using a fundamental period prescribed in the
latest revision of IS 1893 – 2016. Reinforcement provided in design of member will be of
grade Fe500 (with minimum yield strength = 500 N/mm2) as per IS: 1786-2008.

Ductile detailing norms will be adopted to make the building earthquake resistant in
accordance with the relevant IS Codes.

4. Structural System:

The building has been designed as suspended slab system. The G+1 storey building with
basement has Special moment resistant frame (SMRF) as it is primary lateral load resisting
system.

The earthquake forces will be applied from Base level onwards and base storey shear will

Page | 3
be scaled to code specified minimum base shear.

5. Meteorological Conditions:

The environmental conditions to which the structural elements are considered to be exposed to
are as follows:

Element Exposure Condition

Foundation Moderate

Interior beams, slabs, columns and Brick Walls Mild

Exterior beams, slabs, columns and Brick Walls Moderate

Moderate exposure condition shall be explained as one where concrete surfaces are sheltered
from severe rain or freezing whilst wet; concrete exposed to condensation and rain; concrete
continuously under water; concrete in contact under non-aggressive soil; concrete surfaces
sheltered from saturated salt in coastal areas.

6. Fire Rating:
A structural element required to have fire resistance should be designed to possess an
appropriate degree of resistance to flame penetration; heat transmission and failure.

According to fire resistance Type 1 Construction has been adopted for the structure. The fire
rating considered for various structural elements for Type 1 construction are as follows:

Structural Element Fire Rating

Columns, Staircases 2.0 Hours

Beams and Slabs 2.0 Hours

Page | 4
7. Materials:
The minimum grade of concrete to be used depends on the exposure conditions to which the
structural elements are subjected to. The grade of concrete and steel considered for the various
elements are as follows:-

Columns and Shear Walls M25

Beams M25
Slabs M25
P.C.C M7.5

The steel reinforcement to be used shall be Fe500 TMT conforming to IS: 1786.

The self – weight of the various elements are computed based on the built weight of materials
as given below:

exposure conditions for the superstructure or moderate exposure conditions for the
substructure and to satisfy the specified fire rating.
