Introduction and Background Material:

At high school level we often deal with the solution of the equations. There we have
learnt some useful methods to solve the equations. We will take there some examples to
revise this concept:
Linear equation:
It is an equation in which the maximum power of the variable is always
1.

x2 0

It is a very simple linear equation in which we will find the value of the unknown x as;
x 2 2 0 2
x 2
x
The number is also called the root of the equation. Therefore solution of the above
linear equation is equal to 2.
Quadratic equation:
It is an equation in which the maximum power of the variable is equal
to 2 , also the coefficient of that variable is non-zero.
x2 4 0
It is a very simple quadratic equation in which we will find the value of the unknown x
as;
x2 4

x 4 4 0 4
2

x2

x2 4
x
2
The number x is also called the root of the equation. Therefore solution of the above
linear equation is equal to 2 and 2 because they satisfy the above quadratic equation as;
L.H .S x 2 4
2 4
2

44
0
Similarly x 2 must satisfy the above quadratic equation.
Note:
In both equations the values of the unknowns are found. That is we are interested
only in finding the solution of the equations.
Similarly in differential equations we will find the values of the unknowns, but
there is some difference in the solution of the equations and the solution of the
differential equations. The solutions of the above examples are numbers (real or

complex). But on the other hand the solutions of the differential equations are the
functions.
For examples the solution of the following differential equation is a function.
dy
1

dx
x
y

ln
x

Its solution is
constant because it satisfies the above differential equation as;
dy
L.H .S
dx
d
ln x
dx
1

x
R.H .S
Do not confuse about the solution because in the coming lectures we will study
some useful techniques to find the solution of the differential equations.
