"A rubber ball rebounds to half the height it drops. If the ball is dropped from a
rooftop 18 m above the ground, what is the total distance traveled by the time it
hits the ground the third time?
a. 31.5 m
b. 40.5 m
c. 45 m
d. 63 m

First, the student must add the 18 m the ball is drop from.

18

The ball comes up half of 18, which is 9.

18+9=27

What is up must come down so you add the 9 m as it comes down.

18+9+9=36

The ball will then go up half of 9, which is 4.5.

18+9+9+4.5+=40.5

As we know, what goes up must come down, therefore we add 4.5 to the
equation.

18+9+9+4.5+4.5=45

The student will have found the final

answer of 45. The first time it hits the
ground the ball traveled 18 m, the 2nd
time it hits the ground the ball has
traveled 36 m. Lastly, on the 3rd time
the ball has traveled 45 m.
