technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and
number sense as appropriate, to solve problems;

Step 1: Release the ball 18 meters from the roof

Step 2: The rubber ball drops to the


ground at 18 meters.

Step 3: The rubber ball springs back


half up 9 meters and goes down 9
meters.
18+9+9= 39
meters

Step 4: The rubber ball bounces


back half way 4.5 up and 4.5 down.

9+9+18+4.5+4.
5=45 meters

Problem Solving
The rubber ball is released from the house roof to the ground.
The rubber ball drops and bounces back up 18 meters.
On the second bounce, the ball goes up 9 meters and falls down
9 meters.

Next, the ball comes right back up 4.5 meters and again down
4.5.

Finally add up all the numbers: 18+9+9+4.5+4.5=45 meters.
