Service Learning Project Competition

Overview:
Students planned service projects in small groups to be presented to their
peers in class after which each class was to select (collaboratively) one project to
actually complete. Once a project was selected, each class planned and organized
their service projects to complete. Classes competed against each other to have the
most successful service project.

Objectives:
The students will be a part of a team where they will develop their leadership
and collaborative skills. The students will organize and plan service learning projects
that they will formally present to their peers. The students will evaluate project
proposals and, through a roundtable discussion format, choose one team project to
complete as a class. The students will understand how it feels to help others in
need. The students will plan and collaboratively complete a service project. The
students will document the process of the project so they may create a project
highlight video using Microsoft Movie Maker.

2. Students break up into groups and begin researching not-for-profit organizations
that help in some area that they are interested in helping.
3. In their groups, students choose a service project to focus their service project
plan on and then create an idea of how they are going to help that organization.

4. Student groups construct their presentation boards with their ideas for their
projects.
5. Student groups present ideas to class
6. Class then meet as one large class and discuss the pros/cons of each project
before ultimately deciding on which project to do as a whole class.
7. Once project is selected, students begin making lists of what needs to be done
and begin breaking up into committees to accomplish their goals.
8. Project video highlighting the process and outcome of the project is completed
and shown to peers, family, and community members at the Global Issues Fair.
