Telling the time

Q. Jam berapa? = Whats the time?
A. Jam _______ = The time is ___________
When telling the time you must always start
with jam!
Eg. Jam satu = 1 oclock
Setengah = half
Seperempat = quarter
Lebih/lewat = past/plus
Kurang = less/to
menit= minute

When saying half past the hour, we must always

say half to the next hour in Indonesian. So half
past 6 (6.30) is said as half to 7. This is said as
jam setengah tujuh (7).
Between 6.01 and 6.29 we use lewat or lebih to
tell the time. So 6.01 is jam enam lebih satu
menit. 6.15 is jam enam lebih seperempat
menit.
Between 6.31 and 6.59 we use kurang and
count from the above hour. So 6.32 is jam tujuh
kurang dua puluh delapan menit, 7 oclock
minus 28 minutes.

Recap

If the time is between 5.01 and 5.29 we use lewat or lebih.

This means past or after the current hour!
If the time is between 5.31 and 5.59 we use kurang. This
means to and is taken from the next hour up. So if its 5.31
its 6 MINUS 29 minutes.
We can use pagi, siang, sore and malam to assist with pm
and am times.
