TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

Subject Title: Earthquake Geology & Geoinformatics

Course No: IEQ-05

TUTORIAL # 1
1. Explain process of deformation and rupturing in generating earthquake
(i.e. Elastic Rebound Theory).
2. Explain all characteristics of seismic waves those get generated due to
earthquake.

TUTORIAL # 2
1. Discuss propagation of seismic waves through the media with the help
of empirical formula.
2. Show P and S waves shadow zones considering an earthquake source
and seismic wave propagation through the interior of the earth.
3. Where within the earth seismic wave undergoes drastic change in
velocity.

TUTORIAL # 3
1. Define Intensity and Magnitude
2. Define Richters zero magnitude. Also show with the help of formula the
zero magnitude.
3. Why magnitude estimates such as Mb and Ms have saturation
problems.

4. Estimate seismic moment in case of an earthquake generating fault

having following parameters. Length of the fault rupture=1100km; Width of
the fault rupture=90 km; Thickness (on surface)=50m; Average
displacement or slip occurred=15m. Take Shear Modulus as 3
1010 Nm-2.
(Calculation steps in obtaining result in Nm are a must).

TUTORIAL # 4
1. What do understand by dilatational and compressional seismic signals?
2. Show and explain with the help of a suitable 3-D block diagram
recording of compressional and dilatational signals with respect to the
earthquake source.

Additional
3. Show the normal, reverse and strike-slip faulting by drawing 3D block
diagram and associated fault plane solution (beach ball diagram).
4. What modifications in seismic waves take place while propagating
through thin soil layer? How amplification of seismic wave in thin soil can
be explained?
5. Explain liquefaction along with their characteristics.
