Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures

Elective-II IV/II
Chapter-1
1) What causes earthquake? Explain in detail. [5]
2) Describe the Elastic Rebound Theory and Continental drift Theory with suitable sketches. [7]
3) What are the types of earthquake waves defined up to now? Differentiate those waves in terms
of its characteristics and effect on structures. [5]
4) What do you mean by seismic hazard? How it can be estimated? [5]
5) Explain response of different types of concrete structure to the earthquake ground motion. [5]

Numerical:
6) Calculate the moment magnitude of an earthquake with the rupture area dimensions of length
35km, width 15 km and slip 1 meter. Assume modulus of rigidity,  = 3.5x1010 N/m2. [5]

7) An earthquake causes an average of 2.6m strike-slip displacement over a 75km long, 22 km deep
portion of a transformed fault. Assuming the average rupture strength along the fault as 180 kN/m2,
estimate the seismic moment and moment magnitude of the earthquake. [5]

8) A seismograph located 1200 km from the epicenter of an earthquake records a maximum ground
displacement of 15.6 mm for surface waves having a period of 20 seconds. Based on these
assumptions, determine the surface wave magnitude. Also calculate the total energy released
during the earthquake. [8]
(Ms = log(A) + 1.66 log() + 2.0 Gutenberg and Richter with period of about 20 sec)
(Ms = log(A/T) + 1.66 log() + 3.3)
(log(E) = 11.8 + 1.5Ms ergs)
