The evaluation of
ULCER INDEX
stomach.
Severity of gastric ulcer score
0 = no ulcers
1 =changes limited to superficial layer of the mucosa with no congestion.
2 = half the mucosal thickness will show necrotic changes.
3 = more than 2/3rd of the mucosal thickness will show necrotic changes.
4 = complete destruction of the mucosa with hemorrhage.
The Ulcer Index (UI) is calculated as given below
UI = Un + Us + (Up 10-1)
Un = average number of ulcers per animal.
Histopathological Examination
Stomachs tissue samples will be fixed in 10% formalin, embedded in
paraffin, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histological
examination using light microscopy.
All stomach specimens will also be graded according to a modified version of
Dixons system for chemical gastritis. Slides will be assessed for Foveolar
hyperplasia, oedema, and prominent smooth muscle fibres and will be
graded as
0 = Negative.
1 = Mild.
2 = Moderate.
3 = Severe.
