Cable Statements:
A double shielded and properly terminated external interface cable must be used with this equipment when interfacing with
the ALTITUDE ENCODER INPUT Connector.
For continued EMC compliance, all external cables, except supplied Antenna coaxial cable, must be 3 meters or less in
length.

Nomenclature Statement:
In this manual Test Set or Unit refers to the ATC-600A-2 Transponder and DME Test Set.

ESD Statement:
An Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) to either Front Panel Edge Meter may cause a momentary deflection of the Meter.

CASE, COVER OR PANEL REMOVAL
Removing the Chassis Assembly from the Case Assembly exposes the operator to electrical hazards that
can result in electrical shock or equipment damage. Do not operate this Test Set with the Chassis Assembly
removed from the Case Assembly.

Check specifications for the maximum voltage, current and power ratings of any connector on the Test Set
before connecting it with a probe from a terminal device. Be sure the terminal device performs within these
specifications before using it for measurement, to prevent electrical shock or damage to the equipment.
POWER CORDS
Power cords must not be frayed, broken nor expose bare wiring when operating this equipment.
USE RECOMMENDED FUSES ONLY
Use only fuses specifically recommended for the equipment at the specified current and voltage ratings.
INTERNAL BATTERY
This unit contains a Sealed-Lead Battery, serviceable only by a qualified technician.
CAUTION:

SIGNAL GENERATORS CAN BE A SOURCE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE (EMI) TO


COMMUNICATION RECEIVERS. SOME TRANSMITTED SIGNALS CAN CAUSE DISRUPTION

1.1 DESCRIPTION

m e a su r i n g e q u i p m e n t ( D M E ) s y s t e m s w i t h o u t
r e m o v i n g t h e s y s t e ms f r o m t h e a i r c r a f t .
T h e T e st S e t c o n t a i n s b u i l t - i n s i g n a l
generators and modulators for XPDR and
selected DME frequencies. For ramp
operation, the RF output is coupled to the
a i r b o r n e e q u i p me n t b y a r e mo t e t r i p o d
m o u n t e d a n t e n n a s y s t e m . F o r b e n ch
operation, coaxial cables are required
b e t w e e n t h e T e st S e t a n d U U T .

N I C A D b a t t e r y a n d b u i l t - i n ch a r g i n g syst e m

Test Set is plugged to an ac line, the

Test Set off after 7-10 minutes. The Test
S e t ca n b e r e cycl e d b y p r e ssi n g t h e
P W R / B A T S w i t ch t o t h e B A T p o si t i o n .

1.2 FUNCTIONAL CAPABILITIES


The ATC-600A-2 has the following features

and A/C CODE. The A/C ALT Mode
d i sp l a ys t h e a i t i t u d e c o d e . T h e A / C C O D E
Mode displays the pilots code. Code
pulses and the numerical readout are
displayed simultaneously in all modes.

FREQ/PWR Meter indicates peak RF power


a n d t h e t r a n sm i t t e r f r e q u e n cy o f t h e U U T .
The XPDR % RPLY/DME PRF MTR
indicates XPDR percent reply and DME
i n t e r r o g a t i o n p u l se r e p e t i t i o n f r e q u e n cy
(PRF).

The Interrogation Spacing Control allows


p r e ci se ch e cki n g o f t h e X P D R i n p u t p u l se
d e co d e r g a t e . T h e F r a mi n g P u l se S p a ci n g
Control allows checking of the F2 pulse
width and position relative to F1. The

1. INST ALLATION
1.1 GENERAL

Installation/operating personnel should attempt


t o i n st a l l o r o p e r a t e t h e T e st S e t o n l y a f t e r
reading and complying with instructions
contained in this manual. All procedures
c o n t a i n e d i n t h i s m a n u a l m u s t b e p e r f o r me d i n
exact sequence and manner described.

NOTE:

The Test Set can operate continuously


o n a c p o w e r f o r se r vi ci n g a n d / o r
bench tests.

Complying with Instructions

Grounding Power Cord

1.2 BATTERY OPERATION
The internal battery (NICAD) is equipped to
p o w e r t h e T e st S e t f o r 2 h o u r s o f co n t i n u o u s
use, after which time, the Test Set battery
n e e d s r e ch a r g i n g .
When the BAT Test Switch is pressed, the
XPDR % RPLY/DME PRF MTR displays the
battery voltage. Normal battery charged
condition is indicated as well within the white
band. The left edge of the white band
i n d i ca t e s 1 2 . 1 V . A n a u t o ma t i c l o w vo l t a g e
cutoff circuit turns the Test Set OFF when the
b a t t e r y vo l t a g e d r o p s u n d e r a p p r o xi ma t e l y
11.4 V.
T h e T e st S e t co n t a i n s a n a u t o ma t i c t i me - o u t t o
co n se r ve p o w e r . A n a u t o m a t i c t i m e r t u r n s t h e
T e st S e t O F F a f t e r 7 - 1 0 m i n u t e s ( o n l y w h e n
u si n g b a t t e r y p o w e r ) . T h e T e st S e t ca n b e
recycled by pressing the PWR/BAT Switch to
t h e B A T p o si t i o n .
1.3 BATTERY CHARGING
T h e b a t t e r y ch a r g e r o p e r a t e s w h e n e ve r a c
p o w e r i s a p p l i e d t o t h e T e st S e t . T h e b a t t e r y
should be charged every three months
(minimum).
NOTE:

Overnight charging is recommended.

1.4 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

WARNING:

USING A THREE-PRONG TO
TWO-PRONG ADAPTER PLUG
CREATES A SHOCK HAZARD
BETWEEN THE CHASSIS AND
ELECTRICAL GROUND.

3.4 BATTERY PARAMETERS


T h e b a t t e r y p e r m i t s co m p l e t e l y p o r t a b l e r a m p
o p e r a t i o n f o r u p t o t w o h o u r s.
In battery operation, an automatic timer turns
t h e T e st S e t O F F a f t e r 7 - 1 0 m i n u t e s. T h e
Test Set can be recycled by pressing the
PWR/BAT Switch to the BAT position.
When the BAT Test Switch is pressed, the
XPDR % RPLY/DME PRF MTR displays the
battery voltage. Normal battery charged
condition is indicated as well within the white
band. The left edge of the white band
i n d i ca t e s 1 2 . 1 V ) . A n a u t o ma t i c l o w vo l t a g e
cutoff circuit turns the Test Set OFF when the
b a t t e r y vo l t a g e d r o p s u n d e r 1 1 . 7 V .
