ENABLES HER TO EMERGE A TOP STUDENT AND SHE SECURES A
SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY IN LONDON. MORE IMPORTANTLY I ADMIRE HER
FOR HER BRAVERY AND HER QUEST FOR TRUTH. DESPITE THE RUMOURS

IN MY OPINION, ONE IMPORTANT THEME IN THE CURSE IS NOT TO SPREAD


RUMOURS AS IT CAN LEAD TO DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES. IN THE
NOVEL, WE HAVE THE OLD LADY OF THE FOREST. THE VILLAGERS
BELIEVES THAT SHE IS A WITCH WHO HAD KILLED HER HUSBAND, MADE
SOUP AND DISTRIBUTED TO HER NEIGHBOURS. SUCH RUMOURS WERE
SPREAD BY GOSSIP-MONGERS LIKE PUAN NORMALA. AS THE RESULT OF
SUCH RUMOURS THE OLD LADY IS OSTRACISED BY THE VILLAGERS AND
CHILDREN GROW UP AFRAID OF HER. SHE IS SAID TO HAVE KILLED
SQUIRRELS AND RATS. IN ACTUAL FACT IT WAS BRAVE AZREEN TO FOUND
OUT THE TRUTH. THE OLD LADY WAS MARRIED TO A DRUNK AND ABUSIVE
MAN. HE THREATENED TO KILL HER SEVERAL TIMES AND IN ONE VIOLENT
EPISODE SHE KILLED HIM IN SELF-DEFENCE. INSTEAD OF SYMPATHISING
WITH HER, THE VILLAGERS OSTRACISED HER. IT IS AZREEN WHO

REALISES SHE IS A WISE WOMAN. THE OLD LADY BECOMES HER TRUE
FRIEND.

MORAL VALUE

ONE MORAL VALUE DEPICTED IN THE CURSE IS BRAVERY. AZREEN, WHO IS


THE PROTAGONIST IN THIS STORY, DISPLAYS THIS MORAL VALUE. EVEN
AS A YOUNG GIRL SHE TAKE CHALLENGE AND TRIES TO PROVE TO HER
FRIENDS THAT THE OLD LADY IS NOT AN EVIL WITCH. WHEN SHE IS
YELLED AT FOR ENTERING THE OLD LADYS HOUSE AND DESTROYING HER
GARDEN, AZREEN BRAVELY STANDS HER GROUND. IN FACT, THE NEXT
DAY SHE RETURNES AND REPAIRS THE TRAMPLED GARDEN. THIS ACT OF
HERS FINALLY WINS THE OLD LADYS HEART. SOON, A CLOSE
RELATIONSHIP IS FORGED BETWEEN THEM. IN ANOTHER INCIDENT,
AZREEN DEMONSTRATES COURAGE WHEN SHE BRAVELY TAKES THE BLAME
FOR MOHD ASRAFS IN THE BULL INCIDENT. THE SAME BULL LATER
INJURIES HER MOTHERS LEG, CAUSING HER TO LOSED THE THE USE OF
THE LEG. DESPITE BEING BLAMED AND SCOLDED BY HER FATHER AND
SCORNED UPON BY THE VILLAGERS FOR BEING IRRESPONSIBLE, SHE
BRAVELY ENDURES IT ALL AND NEVER TELLS ANYONE WHAT REALLY
HAPPENED.
