FUNDAMENTALS OF SOIL BEHAVIOUR Time : 3 Hours
Max. Marks : 100
(Answer any 5 questions).
1. a) What are the methods adopted for measuring the density of the compacted soil ? Briefly describe the one which will suit all types of soils. b) Draw an ideal compaction curve and discuss the effect of moisture on the dry density of soil. 2. An earthen embankment is to be compacted to a dry density of 18 kN/m3 at a placement water content of 12%. The soil for the embankment is to be taken out of a borrow area having a bulk density of 16.8 kN/m3 and moisture content of 12%. How much volume of borrow soil is to be dug to form 100m3 of the compacted fill ? 3. a) Discuss the methods for estimating immediate settlements of foundations on clay. b) Estimate the immediate settlement of a concrete footing 1m 2m size, founded at a depth of 1m in a soil with E = 103 t/m2, = 0.3. The footing is subjected to a pressure of 20 t/m2. Assume the footing to be rigid. 4. What is Hvorslevs strength theory ? How does it differ from the Mohr Coulomb theory ? 5. What are the different causes of preconsolidation in soils ? What is the effect of preconsolidation on the settlement ? 6. Discuss the characteristics and construction of kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite mineral groups.
