Positioning of patient
Inspection
hands tobacco staining, pallor, clubbing, signs of endocarditis, pallor
testing for clubbing
INSPECTION of face for central cyanosis, xanthelasma, corneal arcus etc
Peripheral examination
Pulse-rate, rhythm count for 15 secs to estimate rate
Test for collapsing pulse
Compare radial pulses simultaneously
blood pressure
examine jvp with patient lying at 45 degrees
Inspection of praecordium- scars pulsations etc
Palpation for apex beat
Palpation for parasternal heaves and thrills in 4 areas
Auscultation in 4 areas- aortic, pulmonary, lower left sternal edge and apex
USE carotid pulse to assist timing
Listen for bruits over carotid arteries
Listen for aortic regurgitation with patient sitting forward
Listen to lung bases
Check for sacral oedema
Palpation for aortic aneurysm
Inspection of legs
-varicose veins, pallor, hair loss, ulceration
Check temp. of legs
check for pitting oedema
Feel for femoral pulse
Palpate femoral and radial pulses simultaneously
(Listen to bruit over femoral artery)
Feel for posterior tibeal and dorsalis pedis pulses
Hand hygeine
