Flanged Pipe and Fittings for

Water and Other Liquids
Flanged pipe and fittings are typical components in rigid piping systems. Such systems are
particularly suited for above ground installation in the following: water filtration plants, sewage
disposal plants, wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and industrial plants. U.S. Pipe
gives special attention to such installations through its Customer Service Department. The
underground use of the flanged joint is generally not recommended due to the rigidity of the
joint. Unequal settlement or other stressing of such piping may result in excessive strain on the
flanges or the pipe.

Flanged Pipe with Threaded Flanges

Flanged pipe are fabricated by threading plain end pipe, screwing threaded flange(s) on and
machine-tightening them. The bolt holes are aligned per ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15. The plain
end and the flange are then faced to provide a smooth surface across the end of the pipe
and the face of the flange. Pipe barrels and flanges have a taper pipe thread (NPT) in
accordance with ANSI B1.20.1, with thread diameters adapted to Ductile Iron pipe standard
outside diameters. Threaded pipe and threaded flanges are individually fitted and the
flanges are not interchangeable.
Flanged pipe are furnished in the following maximum lengths:
Sizes 4"-42" 17'6"
Sizes 3", 48"-64" 19'6"

ANSI /AWWA Standards

ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15 Flanged DuctileIron Pipe with Ductile-Iron or Gray-Iron
Threaded Flanges.
Threaded flanged pipe conform to the
requirements of ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15.

Ductile-Iron Compact Fittings, For Water
Service (54" through 64" sizes).

Pipe for wastewater service may be furnished in accordance with ASTM 746 Standard
Specification for Ductile Iron Gravity Sewer Pipe. The minimum class thickness for Ductile Iron
flanged pipe to be threaded is class 53 for sizes up through 54" and pressure class 350 for 60"
and 64" sizes. Greater pipe wall thicknesses can be furnished if so ordered.

U.S. Pipes Flanged Fittings are produced of

ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10.

ANSI/AWWA C116/A21.16 Protective FusionBonded Epoxy Coatings for the Interior and
Exterior Surfaces of Ductile-Iron and GrayIron Fittings for Water Supply Service.

Weights of flanged pipe shown are subject to a minus tolerance of not more than 10% for individual pieces. To obtain the weight of a short flanged pipe, calculate the pipe weight for the
length from face to face of the flanges and add the weight of two flanges.
The Foreword of ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15 lists the required information and the options which if
desired must be specified on the purchase order for flanged pipe, such as size and finished length.
See the standard for more details.

Coating Systems
Unless otherwise specified, flanged pipe will be furnished with a standard thickness cementmortar lining with asphaltic coating inside and outside. Fittings are furnished coated or uncoated

Flanged Pipe and Fittings for

Water and Other Liquids (cont.)
Accessories
The gaskets and bolts to be used with flanged pipe and fittings should be selected by the purchaser with due consideration for the particular service and installation requirements. Flanged
joint accessories (bolts, nuts and gaskets) can be furnished by U.S. Pipe if so specified. Rubber
gaskets, 1/8" thick, or U.S. Pipe FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets (4" through 64"size) are recommended
for normal water or sewage service.

Flange Compatibility and Pressure Ratings

The flanges of C110/A21.10, C115/A21.15 and C153/A21.53 standards conform to the drilling
and facing of ANSI B16.1 Class 125 flanges. This B16.1 Class 125 designation leads some to
conclude that these AWWA flanges are only rated at 125 psi service which is not correct.
C110/A21.10 flanged fittings are rated for 350 psi operating pressure for 3" through 12" sizes,
250 psi operating pressure for 14" through 48" sizes and C153/A21.53 fittings are rated for 150
psi operating pressure for 54" through 64" sizes. These ratings are at ambient temperatures with
at least a 2:1 factor of safety. Special gaskets such as U.S. Pipes FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets are
required for operating pressures greater than 250 psi.
(Flanges of Ductile Iron pipe and fittings meeting the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15
or ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10 cannot be joined with Class 250 ANSI B16.1 flanges.)

Special Service Requirements

When requesting prices for flanged piping for carrying chemical solutions, please furnish
complete information regarding the type of material to be conveyed, composition, concentration,
pH, pressure and temperature.

Loose Flanges
CAUTION: U.S. Pipe does not recommend the practice of assembling threaded flanges on
pipe in the field. As an accommodation to our customers, U.S. Pipe does provide flanged
pipe with unattached threaded flanges when specified. Certain precautions must be taken
when loose flanges are assembled to the pipe.
1. The threaded portion of the flange and the pipe are custom machined to accommodate the
exact diameter of the pipe. In addition, the pipe and flange have been faced in the shop
after proper tightening of the flange on the pipe. The unscrewed loose flange must be
mated only with the threaded pipe end on which it had been attached.
2. Extremely high torques are required to properly tighten screw flanges. If there is a question regarding the adequacy of the field tightening means,a trial assembly using grease
on the threads, should be made prior to making the final assembly. Because of the difficulty in tightening large flanges at the job sites, sizes larger than 16" should not be
attempted in the field.
3. The flange should never be final assembled on the pipe without the use of a lubricant or
sealant on the threads.
4. Prior to making the final assembly of the flange on the pipe, the threaded portion of the
flange and the pipe must be cleaned of all
foreign material such as dirt, sand or grit. A suitable solvent should
be used to remove any grease or oil remaining on the threads.
5. A two part 100% solids epoxy thread sealant should be applied to the threaded portion of
the pipe and flange using the sealant manufacturer's recommended procedure. If flanged
pipe will be in seawater,
it is recommended that the exposed threads be coated with Induron
PE-54 epoxy or wrapped with Denso tape which is available from:
Denso North America, Inc.
Houston, Texas
281-821-3355
6. The flange should be tightened until the face of the flange is at least flush with the faced
end of the pipe. Normally the flange can be screwed on the pipe by hand up to approximately the last three threads. Tightening the remaining threads creates the seal between
the pipe and the flange threads. If the face of the flange is not at least flush with the end
of the pipe, a proper seal between the threads will not be made. If the pipe protrudes
beyond the face,
it must be faced off smooth in a machine tool.

NOTE: Actual weights of fittings, sizes 54"-64" may exceed those shown.
Sizes 3"-48" conform to ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10. Sizes 54"-64" conform to ANSI/AWWA C153/A21.53.
For flange details see page 6.
On reducers of certain end combinations the number of bolt holes on one flange have an odd number in one quadrant and the opposite flange has an even
number of holes in the same quadrant so that there are only four positions in which the reducers can be placed to properly assemble with the adjacent
piping. Please take particular note that flange reducers have the vertical centerline marked on the edge of the flange. If assembled with the centerline in the
vertical plane, the casting will properly assemble.
Eccentric reducers with the same dimensions and weights given for concentric reducers are available when specified on purchase order.

FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets For 4" through 64"

Flanged Pipe and Fittings
The FLANGE-TYTE Gasket is a superior ring gasket that can save money on installation and
maintenance costs. When properly assembled, the FLANGE-TYTE Gasket gives a completely leakfree flanged joint at a reasonable bolt torque, even at high internal operating pressures on
flanged pipe, fittings, valves and hydrants.
A flange piping system can be installed with FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets and operated safely at high
internal pressures and high velocities and still handle the ever-present threat of high surges
without fear of gasket leaks. The FLANGE-TYTE Gasket is listed by Underwriters Laboratories.
Flanged joints with FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets are approved by Factory Mutual.
Flanges must conform to ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15 Flanged Ductile-Iron Pipe with Threaded
Flanges or ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10 Ductile-Iron and Gray-Iron Fittings, 3" through 48", For Water.
Flanged joints sealed with FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets are rated by U.S. Pipe for 350 psi working pressure for the 4" through 24" sizes, 250 psi for the 36" through 48" sizes and 150 psi for the 54"
through 64" sizes, based on the performance requirements of ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 RubberGasket Joints for Ductile Iron Pressure Pipe and Fittings. These FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets qualify as
a specially designed gasket in accordance with ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 which recognizes
350 psi rating for 24" and smaller sizes. 30" and 36" gaskets are rated for 350 psi as a
manufacturers standard.
Factory Mutual and Underwriters Laboratories rate the 4" through 12" size range for 250 psi.
FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets are 1/8" thick and are available in SBR, EPDM, nitrile, fluorocarbon or
neoprene. The gaskets meet the material requirements of ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11.

NOTE: The flanges used in the above tests

conform to the dimensional requirements of
ANSI/ASME B16.1 Class 125 Flanges as well
the above referenced flange standards

Assembling Flanged Pipe and Fittings

with FLANGE-TYTE Gaskets
The FLANGE-TYTE Gasket for flanged pipe and fittings should be assembled using the same
general procedures and practices as for plain ring type flange gaskets. As with all flange
assemblies, the faces of the flanges must be free of sand, grit, grease or other foreign matter.

For larger diameters, it may be necessary to glue the FLANGE-TYTE Gasket to the face of one of
the flanges prior to aligning the flanges. For smaller diameter joints the gaskets can be dropped
into the joint as it is being assembled. Align the flanges and insert several bolts in the lower half
of the flanges. Drop the FLANGE-TYTE Gasket between the two flanges so that the gasket rests
on the lower bolts. Insert the remaining bolts and follow the tightening procedure below.

Vertical Lines
Center the FLANGE-TYTE Gasket on the lower flange before assembling the joint. The gasket can
also be glued to the face of the flange to keep the gasket from dislodging during the assembly.

Bolt Tightening Procedure

After alignment has been completed, insert the bolts and hand tighten the nuts. Keep the gap
between the flanges approximately uniform while tightening. Tighten the bolts to the required
torque in several steps, alternating from one side to the other.

psi

Torque Values are in ft-lb.

These torque values are appropriate for use
with FLANGE TYTE Gaskets. For correct
torque values on other gaskets, consult
the gasket supplier.
The FLANGE-TYTE gasket is 1/8" thick

Method of Designating Outlets

of Reducing Fittings in Specifications

NOTE: The largest opening establishes the

basic size of a reducing fitting. The
largest opening is named first, except for
bullhead tees which are reducing on both
runs and for double branch elbows where
both branches are reducing, the
outlet is the largest opening and named
last in both cases.
In designating the openings of reducing
fittings they should be read in the order
indicated by the sequence of the letters a,
b, c and d. In designating the outlets of
side outlet reducing fittings the side outlet
is named last and in the case of the cross
which is not shown the side outlet is
designated by the letter e. Fittings of the
configurations shown on this page that are
not covered on pages 8 through 25 may be

Combination of Standard Fittings

That May be Used in Place of Special Fittings

The illustrations in the SPECIAL columns on this page indicate typical fittings that are often required with a combination of bell, plain
end, and flange outlets. The laying dimensions of these fittings are not covered by any standard and they are therefore usually named
SPECIAL inasmuch as they are made to order to suit certain conditions in piping installations.
To the right of each SPECIAL fitting is shown a combination of Standard fittings that can be used to obtain the same outlet effects as
the Specials. The laying dimensions may not be interchangeable since the dimensions of the Standard fittings are fixed whereas the
Special can be made to a variety of desired lengths.
The use of Standard fittings wherever possible is always recommended as the most economical and such fittings can usually be shipped
out of stock. In sending inquiries for fittings of dimensions deviating from the Standard, state specifically the type of outlets wanted,
reading, sizes, etc., as shown on this page, and give exact dimension from the center line to outlet.
