Assignment 3
1. A uniform plane wave at frequency of 100MHz travels in vacuum along +y
direction. The electric filed of the wave at some instant of time is given E
= 3 ax + 5 ay V/m. Find the phase constant of the wave and the vector
magnetic field.
2. Find parameters of the polarization ellipse for a plane wave described by
E = 4 cos (t + z) ax + 2 cos (t + z + /3) ay
Derive the required expression.
3. The Electric field of a uniform plane wave is given as
E = E0 { (j) ax + (j) ay } e +jz
Find the direction of the wave propagation, vector magnetic field, and the
state of polarization.
4. A LHE wave is to be generated using x and y polarized waves. The tilt
angle and the axial ratio of the polarization ellipse are /4 and 3
respectively. Find the amplitude and phase of the two waves.
5. Two identical linear polarized antennas lie in the x-y plane. Antenna 1
along the x-axis and antenna 2 along a line making p0 angle with the xaxis. If the antenna 1 is excited with voltage 1/_0 find the amplitude and
phase of the voltage with which antenna 2 is to be excited to generate
LHC and RHC polarized wave travelling in +z direction.
6. Show how a RHC polarized wave can be generated by two orthogonal
elliptically polarized waves with axial ratio 2.
7. A RHE polarized wave with AR = 2 and tilt angle /6 with respect to the
horizontal direction is received by an RHC antenna. Find the power
transfer efficiency from the wave to the antenna.
8. The wave in problem 7 is received by an antenna that has Stokes
parameters [1, 0.53, 0.6, 0.6]. Find the power transfer efficiency.
9. A pair of a linear antenna and a RHC antenna is used to generate an
arbitrary state of polarization. Can this combination generate all states of
polarization?
10.The complex E and H fields in a dielectric medium are given by
E = { j ax + 2 ay + -j az } e j(x+z) V/m
H = (1/ 60 { - ax + j ay + az } e j(x+z)
A/m
Show that these fields represent a uniform plane wave. Also find direction
of wave propagation, velocity of the wave, frequency of the wave, Stokes
parameters of the wave, and power transfer efficiency with a receiving system
with RHC state of polarization.
