MAST10007 Linear Algebra

Semester 2, 2015

Assignment 5
Due: 12 noon Monday, September 7.
Late assignments will not be accepted.
You should show all working for all your answers.

Please leave your assignment in your tutors box located near the north entrance to the Richard
Berry building. Make sure that you have written your name, your student number, your tutors
name, and your tutorial time on the front page.
From the questions below, one will be chosen for marking. Please note that some marks will be
allocated for properly setting out your solutions and correct use of notation.

1. For each of the following sets of vectors

(i) Set up a system of linear equations that can be used to determine whether or not the set
is linearly independent.
(ii) Use your linear system to determine if the set is linearly independent or linearly dependent.
Be sure to justify your conclusion.
(a) {(1, 0, 1, 1), (1, 2, 4, 2), (1, 2, 1, 1), (1, 1, 1, 2)},
(b) {(1, 1, 0, 1), (1, 1, 1, 2), (0, 4, 2, 2)}.

2. For each of the following subsets of R3 , either prove that it is a subspace by verifying the conditions
in the definition of subspace, or give a counter example to show it is not a subspace
(a) V = {(x, y, z) R3 : x + y > 1},
(b) W = {(x, y, z) R3 : z = x + y}.

3. Which of the following sets of vectors form a basis for R3 . Give reasons for your answer.
(a) {(1, 2, 3), (2, 3, 1)}
(b) {(1, 2, 3), (2, 3, 1), (3, 5, 4)}
(c) {(1, 2, 3), (2, 3, 1), (3, 1, 2)}
(d) {(1, 2, 3), (2, 3, 1), (3, 1, 2), (1, 3, 2)}
