ELUTRIATION
AIM: To separate the given solid mix of the same density (i.e. on the basis of size b using
elutriator.)
Apparatus: Elutriator, Sand.
THEORY:
The separation of solid particles into several fractions based upon their terminal velocities is
called classifications. Suppose that particles having different settling velocities are placed
with a rising current of water. If the water velocity between the terminal velocities of two
particles a separation will result.
This is called elutriation. The slower settling particle will move up word with water while
the faster settling particle will settle out to the bottom.
Elutriator is vertical tube through which a fluid passes upward at a specific velocity while a
solid mixture whose separation is desired is fed into the top of the column at the bottom of
column of with the fluid several columns of different diameters in series may be used to
bring about a further separation.
If A & B are two different materials in a solid mix. With P A>PB, then if the size range of the
two material is large, no complete separation is likely to take place because terminal
velocity of largest particles of B may be greater than that of sizes that will result from a
separation can be call from ration of sizes of particles of A & B. which have the same
terminal velocities.

PROCEDURE:
1. Adjust the water flow rate through elutriator by using suitable rotameters .
2. Prepare the mix of Silica sand of 3 to 5 different sizes. Add mix of sand to rising
current of water in the first elutriation tube.
3. Samples collected from each elutriator tube are collected dried, weighed and
subjected to the separation can be achieved by adjusting the water flow rate.
