Food Web Activity

Purpose: Construct an accurate food web and discuss the implications of changes to
various species in the web.
Materials:
One set of cards
Colored Pencils/Markers

Large Paper
Glue sticks/Tape

Marker
Pen/Pencil

Procedure:
1. Arrange the cards into a logical food web (no animal should eat anything above it)
but do not glue it down yet. Show it to your teacher.
2. Once your food web has been approved, draw the arrows in the appropriate
direction showing where the energy is going. Use colored pencils or markers
to draw these arrows. (arrows show where the energy is going, not what is eating
what)
3. Which biome is your food web found in? __________________
4. Pick 3 organisms and list the adaptations that they have that allow them to survive
in that biome.

Adaptation

5. Show your web to your teacher. She will kill off one of the species in your web.
My teacher killed off the ______________.
Questions:
1. What does a food web show?

2. How does energy originally enter an ecosystem?

3. How is energy transferred from one organism to another?

4. How much energy will be available for the next trophic level from the previous
level?

5. How did killing off the _____________ affect the rest of the organisms in the food
web? (Which populations decreased/increased and why)

6. Choose 1 organism to increase its population and explain how that would affect the
other organisms in the food web.

7. Using your food web as reference, draw an energy pyramid below including all original
organisms on your food web. Label the trophic levels (producer, primary consumer,
secondary consumer, and tertiary consumer). Some organisms may be in multiple
trophic levels.
