LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET The Scientific Method Background


Information for Learners

The scientific method is a tool used by scientists to answer questions about the world. It
follows step-by-step procedures which are logical and sequential. This is often conducted in
scientific investigations which seek to find out the truth regarding a certain phenomenon.

There are series of steps involved in Scientific Method.

The first step is to make OBSERVATIONS. It consists of receiving knowledge through


our senses from our environment. Observing things around us will lead to good scientific
questions that will recognize a problem we wanted to resolve.

Second step is to conduct a BACKGROUND RESEARCH in order to learn more on the


problem. Learning what others have been discovered about the problem will be easier to
conduct an investigation.

Third step is to formulate a HYPOTHESIS. This is also known as an educated guess for
the possible solution to a problem. It is in the form of statement that is used to predict the
outcome of an experiment.

Fourth step is to design a procedure for an EXPERIMENT. This is done to test the
possible solution to a problem or hypothesis. When you design an experiment, you are
controlling and measuring variables. The things that are changing in an experiment are called
variables. There are three types of variables in an experiment. The controlled or constant
variable (cannot changed), independent variable (can stand, changed and controlled) and
dependent variable (one that is tested and measured).
Fifth step is to ANALYZE DATA OR INFORMATION collected during an experiment
and to draw CONCLUSIONS (summary of findings) whether to accept or reject the
hypothesis. Data can be qualitative (describes qualities or characteristics) or quantitative
(measures values).
And last step is to COMMUNICATE THE RESULTS. This is to present findings of the
conducted experiment for the information of others.

Before going to the area, Lance sprayed his favorite
body cologne. When they were done gathering, one of
his classmates noticed that Lance got a lot of insect

became curious if this has something to do with
spraying his favorite body cologne.

3. Anna received a fancy necklace as a gift


during her 7th birthday from her mother. Within
two months, her mother noticed that the metal

from metal chains and screws. Unfortunately, she
only has calamansi on their kitchen. She
wondered if she can use calamansi extract instead.

4. The pastry chef is baking different


flavors of bread for the Valentine’s day. She
plans to prepare brownies and cinnamon roll.
When she was done baking the goodies, she has
left both the chocolate brownies and cinnamon
roll on top of the table for cooling. She observed
that flies started to go near the chocolate
brownies while the cinnamon roll remained
untouched not even a single fly went near it. She
started to think if the cinnamon ingredient she
used caused her observation on repelling the
flies.

5. After preparing food for lunch,
Manang Elsa put the eggshells in the pots
of her orchid plants instead of throwing
in the garbage bin. She wanted to see her
plants grow healthier soon but did not
want to use chemical fertilizer to speed
up the growth of her orchid plants. After
five days, she woke up to see the plants
increased in size and had even greener
leaves.

Activity 4: Let’s Analyze!


Directions: Read the scientific investigation story below. Choose the letter that corresponds

A group of Grade 7- Rizal students came across one interesting vlog of their favorite
social media influencer that touches the idea of giving
music to plants. It is from this fascinating idea that they
thought of conducting similar investigation as part of their
requirements in their science subject.

They started to read books, surf the internet and


study researches on the effect of music to plant growth.
Members from the group continued to formulate their
respective hypotheses. They went on performing a simple
experiment.

The group selected two San Francisco plants of


similar size planted on the same type of soil and kind of
pots. Both plants were healthy. Each plant were placed in
separate rooms with a window exposed to full sunlight and
were watered with equal amounts every day. They
measured the height of the plants.

Once a day, they played classical music on room 1


for about one hour while leaving room 2 with no music
played. Over a period of two weeks, they noted significant differences in each plant’s
growth.

Directions: Identify the problem in the given situation and give a conclusion using the steps

You bought a dozen of pandesal bread in the nearby bakery store from your house. You ate
10 pieces of it during snacks time in
the afternoon with your friends. The
two unconsumed pandesal bread were
left inside the paper bag over the next
three days. You noticed that after two
humid days, tiny water droplets
appearing like couple of sweat had
accumulated inside the bread bag
which was dark. The leftover pandesal
bread began to moisten. During the 3rd
day, you eventually seen clusters of
grayish spots on the bread surface and
it smelled a foul odor. You asked your
mother about it and she advised not to eat them anymore because molds were already present
in the pandesal.

Information for Learners

The substance of the universe is called matter. Matter is generally referred to as anything
that has mass and takes up space. Matter is classified into pure substance and mixture. Pure
Substance is being classified into elements and compounds.
Elements are substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances. The smallest
particles of matter are called atoms. An atom is the smallest particle of an element. A
chemical symbol is a shorthand method used by chemist to represent an element. Chemists
use one or two letters to represent elements.
All matter is made up of elements which are substances with only one type of atom.
There are 118 elements currently on the Periodic Table. The modern periodic table is used to
organize all the known elements. They are arranged in the table by increasing atomic number.
Each element is represented by its chemical symbol and the number above each symbol is its
atomic number.
Elements can be classified into three: metal, nonmetal and metalloid or semi-metal.
Metals are typically hard, shiny, malleable, ductile and good conductors of heat and
electricity. Nonmetals are usually brittle, non-malleable, have dull appearance and poor
conductors of heat and electricity. Semi-metals or metalloid are elements that exhibit both the
properties of metal and nonmetal.
The metalloids separate the metals and nonmetals on a periodic table. Also, many
periodic tables have a stair-step line on the table identifying the element groups. The line
begins at boron (B) and extends down to polonium (Po). Elements to the left of the line are
considered metals. Elements just to the right of the line exhibit properties of both metals and
nonmetals and are termed metalloids or semimetals. Elements to the far right of the periodic
table are nonmetals. The exception is hydrogen (H), the first element on the periodic table. At
ordinary temperatures and pressures, hydrogen behaves as a nonmetal.
A compound is a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically joined.
When the elements are joined, the atoms lose their individual properties and have different
properties from the elements they are composed of. A chemical formula is used a quick way
to show the composition of compounds.

Background Information for Learners

There are two classifications of matter:

Substance

Substances are form of matter that has definite and unchanging chemical
compositions. Substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Properties
of substance:
1. Has constant chemical composition and characteristic properties.
2. It cannot be separated into components without chemical bonds.
3. Substance can be solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Changes in temperature or pressure
can cause substances to shift between the different phases of matter.

Mixture

A mixture is a material system made up of two or more different substances which are
mixed but not combined chemically. It is a physical combination of two or more
substances in which the identities of the individual substances are retained. Mixtures take
the form of alloys, solutions, suspensions and colloids. The amount of each substance in
the mixture is not fixed.

Background Information for Learners

You had learned from your previous lesson the properties of a solution. You were able to
find out that a solution is formed when a solute is added in a solvent forming a single phase
that appears uniform throughout. Solutions may come in solids, liquids or gas depending on
its solute and solvent.

The concentration of a solution tells the quantity of solute present in a given solvent. A
solution that contains a very small amount of solute is classified as diluted solution while a
solution that contains a large amount of solute is classified as concentrated solution.
Concentrations of solutions can be described qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative
description is simply observing the appearance of the solution while quantitative description
gives the exact amount of solute and solvent present in the solution. It can be expressed in
percent by mass and percent by volume.

Percent by mass expresses the concentration of a solution in terms of the mass of
solute in grams to the mass of the solution.
For example, a salt solution of 10% concentration means that for every 100 grams of
