Grade 3 Meet the TeacherSeptember 21, 2015

Welcome/Introduction

School starts @ 8:10am (please be on time)


Dismissal is at 2:30pm from Exit 6, the Cove
Please notify the school of any appointments or early pick-ups in writing
Lunch this year is period 4 (11:07-11:57am)

Grade 3 Expectations

Big jump from 2nd to 3rd grade


Curriculum is more rigorous, ReadyGen and GoMath programs being implemented
Higher level of responsibility and independence
Individual Goal sheets will be given out 3x a year
Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) College and Career Readiness
Classroom routines

Curriculum

Go Math: reinforce basic skills (add, subtract, multiply and divide) as well as review
concepts expected to be mastered by 2nd gradetelling time to the minute, basic fractions,
measurement, etc.
ELA: Ready Gen new program-more rigorous, word work built in. AUTHENTIC LITERACY
will be a goal. Reading and writing lessons are connected and build upon each other and are
Social Studies and/or Science based
Social Studies: exploring the globe
Small group, partnerships and individual work are all emphasized in class

Homework

Total homework time will eventually be 1 hr 15 min-we are building them to this point
Homework planner should be checked and signed daily by a parent
Homework will be checked as we cover that specific subject area
The work is checked to see that it is complete
Only more challenging problems will be reviewed
Go Math hw books need to come back and forth to school, please do not tear out the pages
Missed homework should be made up

Testing

ELA State test this year will be April 5, 6, & 7


Math State test this year will be April 13, 14, & 15
There will be formative tests throughout the school year, dates TBA
Level 1 is below standards, Level 2 is meets basic standards, level 3 is on grade level, and
level 4 is exceeds the standards


Gym Days

Please make sure that your child wears sneakers (no boots/sandals) and no hoop earrings

Dance

There will be dance for part of the school year, grades will rotate

Trips

There will be at least 3 trips, but we will aim to have as many as possible
Trips will coincide with and reinforce our units of study

Snacks/Birthday Parties

When students reach grade 3 they are no longer allowed to celebrate birthday parties in
class or bring in snack
There will, however, be holiday celebrations and writing celebrations
Parents may join us for our writing celebrations during the school year, dates TBD

Book Orders

Will try to give out book orders monthly (Cash or checks are fine, but checks are preferred)

What can I do to help my child at home?

Complete all homework. Please make sure they are completing all homework assignments
and help them when necessary. Homework is very important-it reinforces what they have
learned in class
Practice writing. Go over their writing and reinforce basic grammar skills and punctuation
Read with them as often as possible, questioning what they have read and build up their
reading time
Practice Math. Reinforce addition and subtraction up to 20. Reinforce adding and
subtracting with regrouping, especially with zeros. Begin multiplication tables from 0 to 12.
Reinforce telling time to the nearest minute
