Dear Ms. Jackson,

Charlotte has so many projects and plans in motion, whether for the future like 2030
Mecklenburg Livable Communities Plan or in process now like the Blue Line
Extension. The county is growing rapidly and the way the city government responds
will influence the way the region will look and grow into the future. I am a junior
geography major at UNCC with a focus on urban and regional planning. A chance to
see this evolution first hand and to work with the people who are taking on this
challenge while still doing all the things that make a city work would be a fantastic
opportunity.
I have researched and done coursework on the planning history of Charlotte through
An Intro to Urban and Regional Planning course last semester. For that course I
interviewed the creator of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Sustainability Report Card. He
explained that a good portion of the raw data he used came from the work done by
or in conjunction with your department.
I ask to be considered for your departments posting for a GIS Planning Intern on
UNCCs Hire A Niner. I am a transfer student and as such have just begun the core
classes of my major. Although I am lacking in the ArcGIS skills that you are looking
for, I am working to gain those skills. I am doing this by using tutorials and personal
tutoring to get up to speed on the software before taking coursework on the subject
next semester.
I am a hardworking and motivated person who learns quickly. I have done the
majority of my coursework to this point while working full-time to pay for college. I
would bring that same drive to the internship if granted the opportunity. You can
find more of my information in my rsum. Thank you for your consideration.
I look forward to hearing from you and being able discuss the position in more
detail. I can be contacted at (201) 595-9271.
Sincerely,
Jacob Stein.
