PRINCIPLES OF MATERIALS AND ADAPTATION

Allwright (1990) argues that materials should teach students to learn and it should be resources books for
ideas and activities for instruction learning and they should give teachers for what they do.

Materials are the center of instruction and one of the most importsnt influences on what goes on in the
classroom.

O'Neill emphasizes that materials should helps in teaching and learning.


Materials should support a mindful approach to learning.

Materials like textbooks and visual aids influence the content and the procedures of learning and the
product of learning are influenced by the materials.

Materials accomodate a flexible, responsive approach to instruction.

Materials have a hidden curriculum that includes attitudes towards knowledge, attitudes towards
teaching and learning and etc.

Materials have an underlying instructional philosophy, approach, method, and content, including
both linguistic and cultural information.

Materials should be slightly higher in their level of difficulty than the students' current level of
English proficiency to allow them to learn new grammatical structures and vocabulary.

Materials should have clear instructional procedure and methods, wwhich is both teacher and
students should be able to understand what is expected in each lesson and the activity.

Materials have support for learning which mean that it supports the development of learners'
English language proficiency for effective communication in real world situations.
