DESIGN

VBELF@RICHMOND.K12.MI.US

\\COURSE DESCRIPTION\\
This course is one of the most important classes a student will ever take. Art teaches people how to see
the world and other cultures from a new perspective, to creatively problem solve and to form and express an opinion. Basic Design is a course that helps the student to discover and use the elements of art
and the principles of design to create successful compositions. The student will quickly learn the satisfaction of creating original artwork.

\\EXIT OUTCOMES\\
The goals for this class are for all students to become more confident, skilled artists through the use of
design and to gain a greater appreciation of art and fellow artists. Artists in this room should involve
themselves fully in the class and the creative process by thinking, sharing their ideas and learning from
one another. All learners will develop an understanding of the elements of art and the principles of design. They will be able to identify these elements and principles in their own artwork and the artwork of
others. Artists in Basic Design will also be able to define vocabulary words related to creating and describing art.

\\COURSE OUTLINE\\
The outline for this course is based on the elements of art and principles of design. Each of the elements
and principles will be taught as part of units that build upon one another throughout the length of the

\\ELECTRONIC DEVICES (phones, iPods, etc.)\\

Electronic devices will be permitted upon my approval at specific times during the class. When we are
working on a final assignment (after all direction has been given), devices will be permitted as long as the
volume is low enough not to distract others and to allow you to hear me speak. ***This does not mean
headphones will be allowed everyday. Devices will be used for music; not for texting, or social media.

\\COURSE REQUIREMENTS\\

The grading policy in the RHS Student Handbook will be applied at all times. Student grades will be based on
formative and summative assessments:
Formative Assessments (20% of your grade) - In-process evaluations of students under
standing of a topic after instruction. These include warm-ups, one-day worksheets, lecture
notes and artist statements or critiques.
Summative Assessments (80% of your grade) - Evaluation of the end-result of a period of
instruction. Typically this is a final project or quiz.
Grades are based on the total points accumulated during the marking period. Project grades will be assigned 10 points for each day the class is working on the project. Students who do not work during class will
lose points for that day. Work may not be taken home if class time is wasted. Course work includes
tests, projects and written assignments. Projects are evaluated on outcomes met, craftsmanship, degree of
difficulty, creativity, and student behavior during the course of the assignment.
All work must be submitted on time. Students will have a one-week grace period where their work can get
graded for full credit. The work turned in after one week from the due date will be given 50% of the total
points allowed.
