Competency 1
Stephanie Brooke Wall

Core Competency 1
Identify as a professional social worker
and conduct oneself accordingly.

Practice Behavior 1.1

Advocate for client access to the services of
social work.

School social workers are responsible for

helping the students get school supplies as
well has helping the School, parents,
students, and community work together.
We packed over 600 book bags for our
Johnston County Schools (JCS).

Practice Behavior 1.2

Practice Personal reflection and self correction to
assure continual professional development.

It is very important to admit when you are wrong.

With most social workers it is our job to be
understanding and our job to be honest.
I witnessed my field advisor assume that a
students favorite subject was Art, and she quickly
corrected my supervisor. My supervisor quickly
apologized.

Practice Behavior 1.3

Attend to professional roles and boundaries

Before school started this past week I have

attended many workshops as well as team
meetings.
It is important as a school social worker to
be present in your school in hopes your
colleagues will utilize you as a resource.

Practice Behavior 1.4

Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior, appearance, and
communication.

You have to dress appropriately meaning no boobs, no butts,

and no belly's. For men those rules are a little different.
You have to know how to communicate with who you are
around. You speak differently with you colleagues versus how
you speak with your clients.
As a school social worker it is important that you have a good
attitude, because you might be the first face the child sees that
morning or the last face they see before they go home.
It is also important that your behavior and attitude is
professional and friendly towards your colleagues

Practice Behavior 1.5

Engage in career long-learning.

Attending and being present at the

faculty workshops
I attended a workshop on Poverty and
Students in Poverty. The information
that I learned is something that will
stick with me for a while.

Practice Behavior 1.6

Use supervision and Consultation.

Planning weekly meetings my field

supervisor to determine what the plan
for the week is.
Also, utilizing the supervisors and other
colleagues as resources. As well as
consulting with them to make sure
everyone is on the same page.
