Core Competency 3
Apply critical thinking to inform and
communicate professional judgments.

Practice Behavior 3.1

Distinguish, appraise, and integrate multiple sources of
knowledge, including research-based knowledge, and
practice wisdom.
For

Social Workers it is important that we collaborate

with our colleagues and the community to better our
resources and better our practice.

am doing this everyday it feels like, however the

main time that I use this is when working with one of
the school counselors on my agency project. We come
together to share our ideas and make our program the
best we can. Two minds are often better than one.

Practice Behavior 3.2

Analyze models of assessment, prevention, intervention, and
evaluation.

The field of social work is ever changing. It is important to

practice different ways to assess a situation and help our clients
to the best of our ability.

I have not had the chance to really assess someone, but my field
supervisor and I discussed the suicide assessment that is used at
the High School and how it has changed over the years. The new
assessment was created and shared with us as social workers
from a group of school counselors. The new assessment helps to
measure how likely a student is to commit suicide, so we can
best assist the situation.

Practice Behavior 3.3

Demonstrate effective oral and written communication in working
with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and
colleagues.

This is an important aspect of a social workers job because we

are the liaison between all of these different groups and we have
to have great communication skills

I have practiced this multiple times. The best example is when I

had to make phone calls to parents who owed the school money
for students lunches. The principle had emailed and sent letters
home with the students, and I then made phone calls to the
parents for the students whose parents had yet to respond to the
email or the letter.
