the special event. During the Roping, it will be at the discretion of the producer to determine
if and when the arena needs to be worked.
Barrel Racing Rules
Contestant may start on either the right or left barrel. When starting on the right barrel, there will
be one right and two left turns around the barrels, and when starting on the left, there will be one
left and two right turns around the barrels.
Cloverleaf barrel patterns only. Any additional turns will result in a no-time. A knocked down

flag intentionally. The contestant must make it across the timer line with the flag or it will result
in a no time. There is no penalty for knocking the coffee can over. There is a 5 second penalty
for knocking over the barrel. A dropped flag will result in a no time.

run has started, you cannot cross the timer line again mounted. Doing so will result in a no
time.
Special Event
This will be a different event every rodeo. This will be selected by the Producer and will not
be revealed until 2 hours before the start of the rodeo. The rules for each one will be made
known on the day of.
Break Away Rules
The rope must be tied at end of rope with string provided by the BCJFRA, so when the calf is
roped, the rope will break away from saddle horn. A cloth fabric flag is to be tied to the rope
at the saddle horn. The calfs head must pass through the loop. The loop may draw up on any
part of the calfs body behind the head. Calf must break string with no assistance from roper.
If roper assists in breaking string, they will receive a no time. It is permissible to un-foul rope
from saddle horn. No time will be given if rope comes loose from saddle horn for any reason
before calf is roped, or if rope does not have a flag attached. Ropers will be allowed one loop
only. Back gate will remain open during all calf roping events except for 10 & Under. All
contestants will use string supplied by producer no exceptions . There will be a ten (10)second
penalty for a broken barrier. Ropers may only throw one (1) loop.
Ribbon Roping Rules
Runner may come from a lower age group but not higher age group than roper. Roper must
be on the ground and have his hands on calf before ribbon is removed. Runner will not be
required to have hands on calf anytime while removing ribbon from calfs tail. If there is no
ribbon on calf when the runner reaches calf for any reason, runner should slide hand down
calfs tail. Failure to do so will result in a no time. Runner must remove ribbon from calf. A
short length of ribbon of about 1/2 inch in width and 6 inches or more in length will be
fastened close to the root of calfs tail while it is in the chute. There will be enough ribbon to
allow the runner to grab and remove it without any trouble. The finish line will be the score
line in the vicinity of the roping chute. Flag Judge must be on ground on flag line. Finish line
will be the flag line and will be imaginary extending from one side of the arena to the other. A
second judge will be in the field to determine if roper had hands on calf. The runner removes
the ribbon and runs back across the flag line for time. In the event ribbon is pulled from calf
behind flag line, runner will cross flag line in the opposite direction to receive time. Only the
roper entered in the event shall receive points. The helper (or runner) will not receive points.
The roper is encouraged to give a minimum of 1/8 total winnings to runner. Any part of the
6
ribbon is legal. Runner must show ribbon to Flag Judge. Judge must see ribbon in hand when
runner crosses the line. Disqualification for this infraction is at the discretion of the Flag
Judge. A boy and girl must work together in this event. If the roper is boy, the runner must be
a girl, and vice versa. The runner must be either a member or a non-member who is entered in
the rodeo that day. There will be a ten (10) second penalty for broken barrier. Ropers may
only through one (1) loop.
Tie Down Rules
Contestant must rope calf, dismount, go down rope, throw calf by hand and cross and tie
any three feet. To qualify as a legal tie, there shall be at least one complete wrap around at
least three legs, a half hitch and hooey. If calf is down when roper reaches it, calf must be
stood on at least three feet (calf must be elevated high enough that calf can regain its feet).
In the event calf has one or more feet roped, calf must be let up on what feet that are not
roped. This will be Judges opinion and decision if calf was let up properly. After roper
signals for time and Judge flags roper, that tie is complete. Tie must hold and three legs
remain crossed for a period of six (6) seconds. Roper must not touch calf after giving signal
until Judge has completed his examination. If the tie comes loose or calf gets to its feet
before the tie has been ruled a fair one, the roper will be given a no time. The Field Flag
Judge will drop flag when hooey is pulled and hands leave pigging string. It is catch as catch
can. After tying the Calf the Field Flag Judge will use stop watch to time six (6) seconds
from the time the roping horse takes his first step forward after the roper has remounted.
Rope will not be removed from calf and rope must remain slack until Field Judge has ruled
on tie. In the event of contestant's catch rope is off the calf after completion of the tie, the six
(6) second time period is to start when roper clears calf. Flag Judge must watch during the
six (6) second period and will stop watch in the event the calf kicks loose and use the time
shown on the watch to determine whether calf was tied long enough for a qualified time.
Roper will be disqualified for removing rope from calf after signaling for time, until the tie
has been ruled on by the Field Judge. If roper touches rope after signaling for time but before
mounting, roper will be given a no time. After re-mounting horse, if contestant intentionally
does not ride forward immediately and give slack, he will be subject to disqualification.
There will be a ten (10) second penalty for broken barrier. Ropers may only through one (1)
loop.
Team Roping
14 & Under Team Roping
You can enter each way 2 times. The entered contestant must be 14 years old or
younger. He/She can select a partner of any age. The partner does not pay entry fee
and will NOT win prize money and/or points. The Contestant can switch ends with
the same person but the same person cannot head for them twice or heel for them
twice. Awards are given on the head side and the heel side. Since everyone has the
opportunity to enter 2 times, points will be possible for both entries. The partner can
7
rope for multiple entered members. There will be a 10 second penalty for a broken
barrier and a five (5) second penalty for a leg.
15 & Over
You can enter each way 2 times. This will be different from the 14 & Under in that
both header and heeler in each team will pay their entry fees, have the opportunity to
win money, earn points and claim awards. While we welcome non-members to
participate in our events; in an effort to preserve the intention of this roping we are
requiring that at least one person on each header/heeler team be a member or be the
immediate family member of a member. This does not mean they have to be your
family member. Just a family member of anyone on our membership list. For further
clarification see Sheila.
BCJFRA Point system
Points will be posted online within 72 hours of the performance. It will be the members (if
over 18) or parents responsibility to look over the points. If you feel there is any
discrepancy then it is the members/parents responsibility to bring it to the attention of the
Producer. Points will also be posted prior to each rodeo. Again, it is the responsibility of the
member/parent to look over points prior to the next rodeo starting and addressing any
questions. If you come to the Producer with point discrepancies weeks after the occurrence,
the points will stand. Points will NOT be accumulated until the contestants membership has
been paid and the Release of Liability Waiver is on file with the Producer.
