Unit Descrip,on: This Natural Disasters unit was


taught through an inquiry based learning
approach. This approach is engaging and hands-on
which has provided opportuni,es for students to
collabora,vely build, test and reect upon their
learning. This unit explored the key science
knowledge and skills expected to be developed
and aEained by the end of Level 6 in accordance
with AusVELS.

Science Knowledge: Scien,c knowledge


included; scien,c vocabulary associated with the
topic; how and why natural disasters occur
(including, earthquakes, volcanic erup,ons and
tsunamis); and disaster management strategies.

Science Skills: Scien,c skills included: safe use


of equipment and materials; par,cipa,on in class
with coopera,ve groups and discussions; make
and test predic,ons; planning an eec,ve
inves,ga,on; and represent and communicate
ideas through a variety of modes.

Unit Report

Grace used scien,c terminology to label the parts of a volcano and could explain why volcanic erup,ons occur. For
example, she stated that the plates move and the conduit brings up the magma and magma comes out and it turns
into lava. Using her knowledge of plate tectonics, Grace also correctly explained that most of the worlds volcanoes
are located in the Ring of Fire.
