Activity Observed: Underhand throwing mixed with locomotor skills

Grade/Age Level: 2nd

DIRECTIONS: You will observe many children performing many different kinds of skills. Select 8 (or as many
as you can) different tasks and describe how the high skilled students and the low skilled students are
performing.

Task
Higher Skilled
1 Underhand throwing to Throwing the ball at a decent
height, catching the ball, keeping
themselves while
their eye on the ball, staying in
standing in a hula hoop

their hula hoop. Throwing the ball

straight above them.

Lower Skilled
Throwing the ball either too high
in a direction far away from them,
or only throwing the ball up a little
bit so there is no challenge. Taking
their eyes off the ball and not
catching it. Not being able to stay
in their hula hoops.
Hands touch the ball when it
comes down but then they lose
control of it. Would step out of the
hula hoop.

2 Throwing the ball up,

clapping, and then
catching the ball

Able to throw it up, clap at least

one time and then still have
coordination to catch the ball.
Eyes stayed on the ball. Looked
fluid.

3 Skipping

Continuous skipping. No
hesitation and no stopping.

Adds in a little hop in between the

skip, or runs.

4 Galloping

Back foot touching front foot.

Continuous.

Walking or running.

5 Hopping

Bouncing/jumping forward with

one foot on the ground, looking
straight ahead,

6 Leaping

Hopping from one leg to the other.

Continuous.

Some students were skipping

because they couldnt stay on one
leg. Stopping because they cant
stay balanced.
They would do a few jumps then
stop and then restart. Not putting
full balance on one foot, just small
bounces.
