The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) will serve as the basis for the class. The class will cover
the role of the citizen in the American political and economic systems. Students will learn about the
United States and Virginia Constitutions and the structure and functions of government institutions
at the national, state, and local levels. Students will also learn the basic principles, structure, and
operation of the American economy. The class is intended to foster patriotism, respect for law, a
sense of civic duty, and informed economic decision making. Students will also organize and
interpret data that relates to civics and economics.

Students need a three-ring notebook with loose-leaf paper and #2 lead pencils.

Students are expected to attend class and participate in class activities and assignments. Students
will be required to keep class notes, review sheets, quizzes, and other handouts in their notebooks.
Students will be required to participate in the Eastern Elementary /Middle School Academic Fair
with either a social studies or science project. If a student is absent from class, it is the responsibility
of the student to obtain and complete make-up work.
Grades for the class will be determined by a combination of class reviews, quizzes, tests, notebook
grades and activities done both in the classroom and at home. The SOL Test for Civics/Economics
will be given in the spring. Students will also be allowed to take a field trip to Washington D.C. as
an extention activity. They will be required to do a notebook project after completing the trip.
It is expected that students will use a word processor to prepare academic fair projects and any other
projects or reports that might be assigned. Students will be working toward proficiency in C/T 8.1,
C/T 8.2, and C/T 8.4.
