Lesson series English food guide

This lesson series is about English food and exists of three lessons. It is helpful to not leave too much time in-between lessons, a
theme week is ideal. This guide is a step by step explanation for teachers and the lesson plans are included at the end. Other
materials are available on the site. It may be helpful to use the PowerPoints when reading this guide.

Lesson one Traditional

Step one
This lesson is all about traditional English food. Since it is the first lesson, explain the concept of the lesson series and the themes of
each lesson. This lesson may contain facts students already know, so after you welcomed your students and explained the lesson
series, begin with a brainstorm. Ask what they know about English traditional food and write it down. Try to refer to this during the
lesson.
Step two
Students should take notes from now on, because they will need it in the test in lesson three.
The PowerPoint for this lesson contains a quiz in which you show pictures of English food and the students guess the name. Most
pictures show the home made versions. After the students guessed, or did not guess, the name, tell a fact about the pictured food.
The facts are at the bottom of the lesson plan for this lesson. Quickly show the pictures again and let the students repeat the
names. If there is time, let them also repeat the related facts.
Step three
Explain the homework. The information is provided on the bottom of the lesson plan for this lesson. Students should come up with
multiple things to bring for the high tea, because this will be coordinated in lesson two. Make groups of three, or let the students
make groups of three. They can then begin working on the assignments.
Step four
This step does not have to take long. Quickly repeat what todays lesson was about and name the theme for the next lesson: Take
away food.

Lesson two take away

Step one

This is the second lesson, so after welcoming your students and presenting the theme ( take away food), you can tell them what will
happen today. First you will talk about take away food, then you will have a look at the top ten take away foods in England and
guess the origin. The students will learn some new words or repeat words they already know. Finally, there are some weird food
facts to and the lesson. Stress that they have to take notes again.
Step two
Talk about take away food. When migrants came to England to work there, they brought their culture and food with them. That is
how it all started. Now it is very popular in England and in the big cities you can find multiple take away places in one street. A lot of
people use take away every day in England, because it is easy and sometimes cheaper than cooking your own food. The top three is
on the PowerPoint.
There is one Dutch restaurant in London I found called My old Dutch. It is a pancake restaurant and the walls are covered in white
and blue tiles. Dutch food is not as popular as other foods.
Step three
The top ten worksheet is on the site and it shows the top ten take away foods in England according to the Mirror. The students will
guess the origin of the different dishes, options are on the PowerPoint. When they are done, show the answers on the PowerPoint
and ask the students if the same dishes are popular in Holland and why there are no Dutch dishes in the top ten.
Step four
Weird food facts. There are three questions on the PowerPoint and the students can guess the answers. The answers are: the Earl of
Sandwich, the Scottish and at Halloween.
Step five
Repeat the homework and figure out which group will bring what food for the high tea. There can be multiple groups that take
brownies for instance, but make sure there is enough variety.

Lesson three high tea

Step one
The final lesson is a high tea and the students talk about the lessons. There will be a test at the end. ( test and answers available on
the site)
Welcome the students and tell them they will present their cook books today, then they will have a high tea and finally a test. It is
very helpful to arrange the tables in groups of six beforehand, otherwise let the students do it. The students will present the cook
books in groups of six, so two groups per table group. There are some helpful questions for the students on the PowerPoint.
Step two

Before having the high tea tell the students about it first. Stress that this will not be on the test and they just have to listen. Tell
them that the proper name is afternoon tea and that, traditionally, there are courses. The high teat that we know would be seen as
American. Have the high tea now and serve tea. Make sure you are prepared with paper plates, napkins, cups and tea, so this part
goes smoothly. There are some topics provided on the PowerPoint for the students to talk about. Encourage English!
Step three
While handing out the test, tell the students that the test will consist of some images, where they have to recognise the name of the
dish, some facts and words.
Let the students do the test. When they have finished, let them swap tests and let them correct other students tests. Find out who
has the least mistakes and reward him/her with a prize ( bag of m and m for instance). If there is time, round of the lesson and ask
the students what they thought of this theme week. If there is no time left, make sure to do it the next lesson.

they will also have to bring something for a high tea ( brownies, sandwiches, chocolate). This will be coordinated in lesson
two. All the information in the lessons will be tested in the third lesson, so the students have to learn their notes.
