Lesson Series English Food Guide
Lesson Series English Food Guide
This lesson series is about English food and exists of three lessons. It is helpful to not leave too much time in-between lessons, a
theme week is ideal. This guide is a step by step explanation for teachers and the lesson plans are included at the end. Other
materials are available on the site. It may be helpful to use the PowerPoints when reading this guide.
This is the second lesson, so after welcoming your students and presenting the theme ( take away food), you can tell them what will
happen today. First you will talk about take away food, then you will have a look at the top ten take away foods in England and
guess the origin. The students will learn some new words or repeat words they already know. Finally, there are some weird food
facts to and the lesson. Stress that they have to take notes again.
Step two
Talk about take away food. When migrants came to England to work there, they brought their culture and food with them. That is
how it all started. Now it is very popular in England and in the big cities you can find multiple take away places in one street. A lot of
people use take away every day in England, because it is easy and sometimes cheaper than cooking your own food. The top three is
on the PowerPoint.
There is one Dutch restaurant in London I found called My old Dutch. It is a pancake restaurant and the walls are covered in white
and blue tiles. Dutch food is not as popular as other foods.
Step three
The top ten worksheet is on the site and it shows the top ten take away foods in England according to the Mirror. The students will
guess the origin of the different dishes, options are on the PowerPoint. When they are done, show the answers on the PowerPoint
and ask the students if the same dishes are popular in Holland and why there are no Dutch dishes in the top ten.
Step four
Weird food facts. There are three questions on the PowerPoint and the students can guess the answers. The answers are: the Earl of
Sandwich, the Scottish and at Halloween.
Step five
Repeat the homework and figure out which group will bring what food for the high tea. There can be multiple groups that take
brownies for instance, but make sure there is enough variety.
Before having the high tea tell the students about it first. Stress that this will not be on the test and they just have to listen. Tell
them that the proper name is afternoon tea and that, traditionally, there are courses. The high teat that we know would be seen as
American. Have the high tea now and serve tea. Make sure you are prepared with paper plates, napkins, cups and tea, so this part
goes smoothly. There are some topics provided on the PowerPoint for the students to talk about. Encourage English!
Step three
While handing out the test, tell the students that the test will consist of some images, where they have to recognise the name of the
dish, some facts and words.
Let the students do the test. When they have finished, let them swap tests and let them correct other students tests. Find out who
has the least mistakes and reward him/her with a prize ( bag of m and m for instance). If there is time, round of the lesson and ask
the students what they thought of this theme week. If there is no time left, make sure to do it the next lesson.

* Cottage pie: It consists of a layer of potatoes and a layer of meat. With cottage pie, it is beef. If you use lamb, it
becomes a sheperds pie.
Sunday roast: English have this on a Sunday. Consists of roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and meat.
Spotted dick: Spotted -> raisins dick-> pudding
Fish and chips: Originally served in an old newspaper to the working class.
Tea with a scone: The English drink tea with milk and you only ask: Do you take sugar? The scone is often served with
jam or cream
**
Homework: all of the homework is for lesson three, but the students have to work on it during the week. In
groups of three, students will make a cookery book containing three English recipes. They will make it a decent, and
beautiful cookery book with a name that they have to take with them for lesson three to present it. In the same group,
they will also have to bring something for a high tea ( brownies, sandwiches, chocolate). This will be coordinated in lesson
two. All the information in the lessons will be tested in the third lesson, so the students have to learn their notes.
