Observation Task 4: Observing a teacher during a Science

Lesson
Objective
To observe Science teaching in action and begin to understand effective
strategies for Science teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure
You will need a copy of the Observation Table:
Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Science and discuss the


lesson with the teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and
the lesson development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.
Get an idea of the Inquiry/experiment the students will do.

Objective: To understand the concept of energy pyramid.


Strategies: Group work- investigation
Inquiry/Experiment:
Engage: Show them the video.
Explore: Read the book silently.
Explain: Reading the book with the teacher and explain how/why it happen.
Extend: Gave them an activity. Which is arrange the creature in order from producer
creature to the top of the consuming creature and writing it on the note book.
Evaluate: The teacher mentoring them if they answer it right or wrong.
give them homework.

During the Observation


Complete the Table and make notes in the appropriate column on:
How the teacher introduces key terms and engages students
The topic and how its introduced
How much of the lesson is teacher talking time
How much group work is used and if students are active participants
What materials were used and their purpose

After the Observation:


1. What was the objective of the lesson? To understand the concept of energy pyramid.
2. Was the objective achieved? It was achieved. when the teacher was check the group work
the majority of the students got the answers right.
3. How were key terms introduced and explained? Showed them the video as introduction
and she moved to the book and explained.
4. How did the teacher build the teaching/leaning? How did the lesson progress?
She showed them video, used the book, did activity and revise the main
points by asking the students.
Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work? Why?
Half of the work she did and the rest the students did it. She explain the lesson approximately
in 20 minutes and the students worked in 20 minutes.
5. Was there an inquiry/experiment? Describe the process.
She engaged them by showing them the video and asked them about it. Make them
explore by reading the paragraph silently. Explain the paragraph. Extend the learning by
giving them the activity and evaluate the students by checking their works and give them
homework.
6. Did students record the experiment?
Yes.
7. How much teaching was done in L1? Why do you think the teachers used L1?
All the lesson because the language of the curriculum changed to Arabic.
8. What was the purpose of these?
Materials are related to the life which make the students remember or learn the
information with the materials.
9. Were there any other resources/materials used to deliver the lesson?
The students used cups as an activity.
10. Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work?
she taught the most of the lesson and group work for 10 minutes.
11. When did she work with the whole class? Why?
From the class started until the activity time. To explain the lesson until the students understand
the lesson by giving examples and ask the students to make them think about the reason.
12. How much of the lesson were the students using the book?
For 15 minutes.
