corDECT

Wireless Access System

An Indian way to Wireless
Revolution
Why corDECT ?
 Cost of setting up traditional copper
based telephone networks very high

 Developing countries like India will

require 35-million pair kilometers of
copper cable to maintain existing
waiting lists.
Why corDECT ?
 The cost of Copper Increasing

 Wireless reduces the cost of Access

part of network which consists of
70% of total costs

 Still cost of setting up Base stations

and their controllers very high
Why corDECT ?
 Eliminates the physical connections
between telephone exchanges and
subscribers

 Has a simple technology structure,

easier to implement, supports large
number of subscribers

 Costs less than traditional Wireless

Structure used by Mobile Operators
The Torch Bearers
 Indian Institute of Technology,
Madras,

 Midas Communication Technologies,

Madras,

 US semiconductor manufacturer
Analog Devices Inc.
The Technology
 Based on the Digital Enhanced
Cordless Telecommunication (DECT)
Standard

 Built around a micro cellular

architecture

 corDECT micro cell could be as

small as 250-meters.
The DECT Standard
 Defines the air interface for users.

 Specifies the interface between the

subscriber terminal and the base
stations.

 DECT/GSM,DECT/ISDN and
DECT/PSTN inter networking profiles
The DECT Standard
 The DECT frequency band is 1880-
1900MHz.

 The standard uses 32kbps ADPCM

(Adaptive Differential Pulse Code
Modulation)
Channel structure corDECT
20 MHz

24 Channels

12 forward channels 12 reverse channels

Architecture And Components

 DECT Interface Unit (DIU),

 compact base stations (CBS),

 subscriber access units

DECT Interface Unit

• ADPCM switch that

serves as an interface
between the public switch
telephone network and the Courtesy: http://www.tenet.res.in

CBS.

•Each DIU is connected to

a maximum of 20 CBS and
each CBS
Compact Base Station
•The CBS is a small, pole-
mounted or wall-mounted
electronic unit that provides 12
simultaneous speech channels.
•Serves cell upto 50-1000 meters
•Each line can carry four
ADPCM speech channels and
one channel of 16kbps signaling
The Subscriber Unit
 Subscriber Unit for looks for access
to strongest base channel
 Locks to the quietest of the available
12 channels
 Ensures Interference free
Communication
 Encryption Protects from Eaves
Dropping
The Subscriber Unit
 The handset is a small, portable battery
operated unit that allows subscribers
limited mobility at pedestrian speed.
Can be operated upto 200m from CBS

 The subscriber can have access to any

CBS connected to one DIU.

 A wallset can be used three-kilometers

from a CBS
Conclusion
 The corDECT wireless local loop system
offers relatively low cost and rapid
installation of telecom services in areas
with even high subscriber density
environments.
 Good Market in developing Countries like
India, Russia, China etc.
 Good for highly dense urban areas
