Ethiopias first taxi company

Around 1937, about a year and half through the second invasion of Ethiopia by Italy, a taxi
company was operating by an Italian businessman named Sighnore Fernondo. The company
opened its doors for service around Georgis Church of Arada as seen in the image. At the time,
the taxis were dark brown and served only European residents around the city. Ethiopians were
not allowed to ride them unless they were bandas or servitore . My other source, which
is The Armenian Weekly, has quoted that the first taxi service in Ethiopia began to operate in
Addis Abeba by Armenian drivers in the year 1915 not in the year 1937.

By making these 10 lifestyle changes, you can

lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk
of heart disease.

By Mayo Clinic Staff

If youve been diagnosed with high
blood pressure (a systolic pressure the
top number of 140 or above or a diastolic
pressure the bottom number of 90 or
above), you might be worried about taking
medication to bring your numbers down.

Lifestyle plays an important role
in treating your high blood pressure. If you
successfully control your blood pressure with
a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or
reduce the need for medication.

Here are 10 lifestyle changes you can
make to lower your blood pressure and keep it
down.
1. Lose extra pounds and watch your waistline
Blood pressure often increases as weight
increases. Losing just 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms)
can help reduce your blood pressure. In general,
the more weight you lose, the lower your
blood pressure. Losing weight also makes any

effective. You and your doctor can determine
your target weight and the best way to achieve
it.

Besides shedding pounds, you should
also keep an eye on your waistline. Carrying too
much weight around your waist can put you at
greater risk of high blood pressure. In general:

Men are at risk if their waist
measurement is greater than 40 inches (102
centimeters, or cm).

Women are at risk if their waist
measurement is greater than 35 inches (89 cm).

Asian men are at risk if their waist
measurement is greater than 36 inches (91 cm).

Asian women are at risk if their waist
measurement is greater than 32 inches (81 cm).
2. Exercise regularly

Regular physical activity at least
30 to 60 minutes most days of the week can
lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters
of mercury (mm Hg). And it doesnt take long
to see a difference. If you havent been active,
increasing your exercise level can lower your
blood pressure within just a few weeks.

If you have prehypertension
systolic pressure between 120 and 139 or
diastolic pressure between 80 and 89 exercise
can help you avoid developing full-blown
hypertension. If you already have hypertension,
regular physical activity can bring your blood
pressure down to safer levels.

Talk to your doctor about developing
an exercise program. Your doctor can help
determine whether you need any exercise
restrictions. Even moderate activity for 10
minutes at a time, such as walking and light
strength training, can help.

But avoid being a weekend warrior.
Trying to squeeze all your exercise in on the
weekends to make up for weekday inactivity
isnt a good strategy. Those sudden bursts of
activity could actually be risky.
3. Eat a healthy diet

Eating a diet that is rich in whole
grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy
products and skimps on saturated fat and
cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by
up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as

Toronto Becomes a Strong Contender Ethiopias Muktar Edris Successfully

to Host ESFNA Tournament Next Year

Defendedgaphis
Title
to 25 seconds and went on to cross the
finish line unchallenged in 28:46.

Trento (HAN) October 11, 2015

Geeska Sports. Ethiopias Muktar Edris
successfully defended his title at the 69th
edition of the Giro Al Sas in Trento on
Saturday (10).

The Annual ESFNA Board Meeting opens in Toronto

The Ethiopian Sports Federation in North
America (ESFNA) is holding its annual
board meeting in Toronto, Canada between
October 9th and October 11th. On top of
its agenda would be to make a decision on
who will host the 33rd soccer tournament
among its over 25 city members next
summer. Toronto, which last hosted
the event 15 years ago in 2000, is a top
contender as a potential city host.

Representatives from 31 teams were

welcomed to Toronto, by the team members
of EthioStar the successful team cup
champions of 2000. Canadas largest city,
recently hosted the just concluded, Pan
American Games and attracted 10,000
athletes alone. The Ethiopian tournament
that attracts people in upwards of 100,000,
brings in millions of dollars to the local
economy. In previous years, the reasons
to turn down Toronto as host were the
fact that, Canada, presented a challenge
for American based Ethiopians at the
Canadian boarders and that, the federation

feared, very few people would be able to

attend the event as the result.
The delegation was assured that the
Canadian government as well as the local
soccer federation will ensure that would
not be the case in 2016. With ample
stadiums, hotels and human capital and a
strong and influential Ethiopian population
that is estimated to be around 80,000, it is
no wonder Toronto is viewed as an ideal
place as host next year.
The delegation toured potential stadiums,
venues for the closing ceremony and
many were satisfied that Toronto was
more than ready to be a host. The local
Ethiopian restaurants made a presentation
as well as showed great hospitality to the
guests. The gathering is to end on Sunday,
October 11th, with the decision on who the
host would be made, ahead of Canadas
Thanksgivings.

The world cross-country bronze medallist

won in 28:46, six seconds faster than his
winning time from last year, to beat a field
that included five-time winner Edwin Soi. A five-man group formed by Edris, 2009
world 1500m champion Youssef Saad
Kamel of Bahrain, world marathon bronze
medallist Solomon Mutai of Uganda, 2008
Olympic 5000m bronze medallist Soi and
2012 Olympic 5000m bronze medallist
Thomas Longosiwa of Kenya took the
early lead on the first one-kilometre lap.
Edris forced the pace, clocking a split
of 2:41 for the fourth lap to pull away
from Soi, Longosiwa and Mutai. Edris
unleashed a sprint to win the half-way
mark bonus and then produced his surge
during the seventh lap when he opened up
a 20-second gap over Longosiwa and Soi.
With one lap to go, Edris increased his

Behind the Ethiopian, five-time Giro al

Sas winner Soi launched his kick to prevail
by four seconds over Longosiwa to take
second place in 29:11. Mutai finished
fourth in 29:42.
Three weeks before he lines up for the New
York Marathon, 2012 European crosscountry champion Andrea Lalli repeated
his fifth-place finish from last year.
It was a good race for me, said Edris. Its
special to win for the second consecutive
year in Trento. Unfortunately I was not very
happy with my track season and my race at
the World Championships in Beijing where
I finished 10th in the 10,000m.
The event, previously known as the Giro di
Trento, returned to its original name Giro
al Sas, which derives from the fact that
the course features 10 one-kilometre loops
on the main city streets which are locally
referred to as Al Sas.
The Giro al Sas was the highlight of a
long weekend of running events within
the Trentino Running Festival which also
featured the Trento Half Marathon.

Sylvia Pankhurst: Citizen of the World

Her Struggle against Colonial Aggression in Ethiopia
Emperor Haile Selassie, Sylvia E. Pankhurst And the Ethiopian Independence
By Berihun Assfaw (Toronto, Canada)

Ato Berihun Assefaw

Continued from the previous issue

In 1956, Sylvia Pankhurst left her
birth country the United Kingdom, the country
in which she fought more than half century for
women votes, for universal suffrage and for
political and social rights of the working masses.
The greatest humanist, anti-racist, and anticolonialist, Sylvia Pankhurst chose as her burial
place economically the poorest, but historically
and culturally the richest country, Ethiopia.
Like any revolutionaries of the past and present
Sylvia, her mother, and her siblings sacrificed
their entire lives in pursuit of the greater goodin this case for the social and political rights of

the British women. Because of this they were

laughed at, imprisoned, starved, and beaten.

From 1906-1922 Sylvia was sent to
Prison fifteen times because she campaigned
for equality of the genders and because she was
against all forms of racism and colonialism. It is
good to see that the British people did not forget
the sacrifices of the Pankhursts. The British they
erected a statue for Sylvias mother, and for her
sister there is a plaque at the Parliamentary
Buildings. A film was made about Sylvias
struggle and they are going to erect a statue in
front of the British Parliament very soon.

Pankhurst died in Addis Ababa on
Sept. 27, 1960 at the age of seventy-eight. It
was Masqal, one of the principal holidays of
Ethiopias year which celebrates the discovery
of the True Cross by Saint Helena. She was
buried in the ground of the Kidest Selassie
Deber- or The Trinity Church, that was set
aside for the AREBEGNOCH or the Patriots,

who struggled for the Ethiopian independence

from fascism, and the unity of Ethiopia and

Eritrea. She had paid greater sacrifices
than anybody except those she had joined in
their burial place, the Arebegnoch.

Pankhurst was. Woizero Sylvia, who
was born to one of the foremost socialist father,
Dr. Richard Pankhurst, and molded by him, and
who grew up in an ambiance in which socialism
was the political philosophy of the educated
class, and who had doubted religion throughout
her life, was given an Ethiopians Orthodox
Church name Walate Krestos (daughter of
Christ).

Her funeral was attended by the
Emperor, the Crown Prince, the Prime Minister,
cabinet ministers, the entire general staff,
and many diplomats including the British
ambassador. The Arebegnoch- the Ethiopian
Patriotic Association members -led by the
President of the association were also present.

The President of the Ethiopian
Patriotic Association laid a bundle of flowers at
her burial ground. The Emperors son-in-law,
and minister of the Interior, Ras Andaregachew
Mesai, who knew Sylvias struggle and worked
with her in the propaganda war against Italy,
read Pankhursts life history and spoke of
her struggle for Ethiopias independence. In
retrospect, the Emperor should have told the
life and work of this great woman who did a lot
more for the liberation of our country than the
Emperor himself.

Pankhurst preferred Ethiopian soil
over that of her birth country, Britain. She
was joined to the country not only through
her struggle but also by blood. Her only son is
married to an Ethiopian and has two children.
Both are outstanding scholars of Ethiopian
history and culture. Professor Richard Pankhurst
has written hundreds of books, pamphlets, and

sign of civilization. From the Emperor down to
his ministers and military officers all attempted
to appear British. The only thing they could not
accomplish was to change their skin. Different
kinds of medals were made in order to be like
the British ruling classes. The Emperor used
to wear about 160 different kinds of medals

looked like the British king when he opened
the British Parliament annually. He created the
titles of prince, princess, and dukedoms, which
had never been used in Ethiopian history. All
military titles from marshal to colonel were
also copied from the British. The Emperor even
gave the British title Lordship to one of his
cronies.

History teaches us that the difference
between the Pope of Rome and King Henry
VIII was due to marriage. Henry VIII, who was
changing wives like shirts, did not want the Pope
of Rome to be a hurdle to his way of life. Henry
had murdered two of his wives, among them
the mother of Queen Elizabeth I, accusing them
of adultery. Since Henry VIII rebelled against
the Pope and separated the Church of England
from Rome, the kings and queens have been the
nominal head of the Anglican Church.

I Am Quitting theofConservatives
Because of Stephen Harper's Politics
our country -- instead of active actors.
We have let our government create two-tier
citizenship for us all.

Samuel Getachew

Ignorance has replaced reason and

compromise within the Conservative party
of Canada. A decade ago, I should have
taken to heart the advice of former Prime
Minister Joe Clark, who reminded us to
support "the devil we know" and look at
the alternative more closely.
To look at where today's Canadian
Conservatives are at present and where the
party is headed, we do not need to go far.
Just observe the candidates up close.
PM Harper
By the time you read this column,
my membership in the Progressive
Conservative Party of Ontario will likely
be revoked. I will no longer be a director
of the Toronto Centre Conservative
Association.
This is not because I am no longer useful
to the once-proud party of Bill Davis, John
Robarts and, yes, Christine Elliott, but
because I am coming out against comrade
Stephen Harper -- our party's federal
counterpart.
In an era of Patrick Brown and Stephen
Harper, loyalty is more important to the
Conservative cause, in both federal and
provincial politics, than the dedication we
show to our citizenship. It should not be
and it is unfair.
The Stephen Harper era has made us
too partisan, extremely fearful of our
neighbours, cheerleaders in world affairs,
less tolerant to new immigrants and
refugees and mere observers in the affairs

Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound candidate MP

Larry Miller is on record suggesting
Muslim women who wear the niqab should
"stay the hell where they came from" and
is still an approved Conservative candidate
for Harper in 2015. The candidate from
Willdowdale, Parliamentary Secretary
for Multiculturalism and MP Chungsen
Leung, once demanded to know why
Iranian Canadians were in Canada in the
first place, "if you like Iran so much."
Joe Daniel, the backbench MP from Don
Valley East, has in recent weeks linked
the Syrian migration crises to a "Muslim
agenda" to take over European counties.
This was meant to be a warning, according
to him, to what is likely to happen to
Canada, should we accept these refugees.
This comes as one-time Brian Mulroney
Foreign Minister Barbara McDougall
coined a column in the Globe and Mail in
response to Stephen Harper's slow and lazy
response to help the Syrian refugees.
Since Harper became our Prime Minister,
he has made Canada less welcoming of

the world's destitute refugees and created

an exclusive society for new immigrants.
The appointees that are put in charge
of deciding the future of our immigrant
population, as Immigration and Refugee
Board adjudicators, have become partisan
and less humane in their approach. As
reported by the Toronto Star's Nicholas
Keung, some are even rejecting 100 per
cent of the asylum seekers that appear
before them, as a Harper appointee, David
McBean, managed to do so.
This is not just wrong, but borderline
xenophobic.
The candidates, the appointees and the
friends of our Prime Minister are indicative
of the country we have been over the last
decade. Somehow, we have lowered our
standards and have become vulnerable,
weak and less open-minded at home and
abroad.

I became interested in Canadian politics at

an early age. I liked the Red Tory tradition
of Brian Mulroney and his unbinding
commitment to the world's vulnerable.
Jack Layton's commitment to human rights
was something to admire. Pierre Trudeau
gave us the Charter of Rights and Freedom,
and John Diefenbaker the Bill of Rights.
All of our Prime Ministers, save Harper,
brought unique qualities to the position
as they attempted to make us less partisan
and more citizen-like in our Canadian
citizenship.

Segal a chance to advocate for his signature

idea -- Guaranteed Annual Income for
Canadians -- and use the Senate of Canada
as his pulpit.
I grew up in Ethiopia at a time when
Canada played a profound role in helping
curb a massive famine disaster in the East
African nation, saving many lives. I know
what Canadian leadership looked like from
a distance. Canada was liked, respected
and was seen as an exemplary country. Not
anymore.
As we deny basic health care to vulnerable
people at home; wedge foolish cultural
warfare in Quebec; link aid exclusively
with Canadian mining company interests
abroad; become cheerleaders in the Middle
East rather than peacemakers; speak out
(sadly) against international institutions
like the United Nations without clear
alternatives; sell arms to rogue states; look
away when the human rights of Canadians
are compromised; and allow Germany to
take Canada's leadership role in the Syrian
refugee crises -- it is no wonder that the
world is asking what ever happened to
Canada.
The Harper government seems to
misunderstand that the role of government
is not to help create billionaires and
millionaires, but to help strengthen society
to be more open, fair and accessible for all.
Rich people do not need an advocate in
government, but ordinary citizens do.

Mulroney chose Stephen Lewis as Canada's

United Nations ambassador, brought a
bipartisan Canadian voice against apartheid
in South Africa and spoke eloquently
for famine victims in Ethiopia. Trudeau
made the wonderful Edward Schreyer, our
Governor General. Paul Martin gave Hugh

Stephen Harper has made us a minor

player, vulnerable at home and weak in the
world. It is unfortunate that his brand is
competitive -- even leading -- in the latest
polls less than a month from the upcoming
federal election. It should not be. There
must be something better out there.

Sunil Gurmukh is a noted lawyer with the

Ontario Human Rights Commission. He
shares with me his upbringings, his law
career, looks back fondly of his term as copresident of the South Asian Law Students
Association at the University of Western
Ontario (now called the University of
Western) and finally gives advice to those
who may want to emulate such a career.

Samuel:Sunil tell us about yourself

Mr. Sunil Gurmukh

My parents emigrated from India in the

70s. They had my brother Neil and me
(thats right our names are Neil and
Sunil) in Ottawa and we moved to Toronto
when I was about four years old. I was a
giant nerd when I was younger; I collected

After completing my commerce degree

at Queens, I headed to Western for law
school. I was immediately attracted to
labour and employment law; I had great
professors in the area and liked the issues
and frequent opportunities to litigate.
Following my summer and articles at Hicks
Morley, a large management-side labour
and employment law firm, I switched
sides and became a Staff Lawyer at the
African Canadian Legal Clinic, a specialty
clinic of Legal Aid Ontario that focuses on
eliminating anti-Black racism. After about
two years, I made the move to the Ontario
Human Rights Commission and broadened
my human rights practice to include all

I owe my success to my family. I followed

my brothers footsteps to become a lawyer.
My dad is the reason I practice human
rights law; he always encourages me to
give back. My mom is the reason I can
practice human rights law; shes not afraid
of anyone so cross-examining an actuary
or a police officer is never intimidating.
My wife Monica moved away from her
family and friends in Vancouver so I can
pursue my dream; her strength and support
mean so much to me.

legislation at the Supreme Court on behalf
of the African Canadian Legal Clinic is
definitely a highlight. Hate speech poses
a threat to the reputation, dignity, and
health of African Canadians and other
vulnerable groups, including South Asians
and the LGBTQ community. Following
the hearing, I was featured on The Agenda
with Steve Paikin on TVO and got to go
toe-toe with my former dean, who is now a
judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal.
Negotiating a settlement to allow kirpans
into Toronto courthouses is another big
highlight. It was so gratifying to help
advance respect for human rights for my
own community (plus my family always
mentions the case).

awarded $40,000 the highest amount the

HRTO has ever awarded in a racial profiling
case. The decision set an important
precedent about race in suspect selection
and recognizes the real and devastating
impact of racial profiling.
Pieters is a racial profiling case that
made its way up to the Ontario Court of
Appeal. I represented the Ontario Human
Rights Commission. The case involved
the treatment of two Black lawyers by
a librarian in the Peel Law Association
lounge in May 2008. Only lawyers,
articling students and students of law
were permitted in the lounge. The librarian
approached them in an aggressive and
challenging manner, and asked them to
produce identification. No one else in
the lounge was questioned and asked for
identification. The HRTO found that the
librarian falsely claimed that the reason she
singled them out was because she knew
everyone else in the lounge.

The biggest highlight of my career,

however, is being out in the community
educating youth on the right to be free
from racial profiling under the Human
Rights Code. Its humbling, energizing,
and inspiring.

We were successful; the Court of Appeal

overruled the Divisional Court and restored
the HRTOs decision that found that
the lawyers were discriminated against.
The Courts judgment shows that racial
profiling is a form of everyday racism and
often the product of unconscious bias.

Samuel:-

Unfortunately, despite these and other

successes, a lot more works needs to be
done to eliminate racial profiling and
carding from our society.

One issue you have worked on, even

with the ACLC and now at the OHRC, is
the controversial issue of carding / racial
profiling. Tell us about that?

Sunil:-

Racial profiling is systemic; it is a dayto-day reality and a quality of life issue

for many racialized individuals and
Indigenous Peoples. Carding is a subset
of racial profiling. It involves the police
arbitrarily stopping individuals for the
purpose of recording and storing their
personal information in an intelligence
database. It has a significant negative
impact on the Black community, including
in Toronto.
My work on racial profiling is varied; I
educate youth on their rights, train police
services on how to identify and reduce
racial profiling, and litigate. Two cases
about racial profiling that I worked on stand
out: Maynard v. Toronto Police Services
Board and Peel Law Association v. Pieters.
Soon after I started at the African Canadian
Legal Clinic, I represented Rawle Maynard
in his human rights complaint against the
Toronto Police. Mr. Maynard, who is
Black, was driving home from his office in
November 2005 when an officer followed
him. The officer had received a report of
an incident involving a Black man with
a gun, at the Malvern Town Centre. Mr.
Maynard was later put, at gunpoint, in the
back of a police car. Shortly thereafter, new
information was received over the radio
that indicated he was not a suspect.
We were successful; the Human Rights
Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) concluded
that the investigation and takedown were
tainted by racial bias. Mr. Maynard was

Samuel:-

Upon graduating from the University of

Western Ontario, where you once served
as the co-President of the South Asian
Law Students Association, you did your
articling at Hicks Morley. There are many
law students that are having a hard time
finding articling positions. What advice do
you have for them?

Sunil:-

Effective networking is key. Setting up

and performing well in informational
interviews can lead to offers. Law students
too often go straight for the business card
without building the relationship. A cold
call doesnt have to be cold; a partner at a
firm youre interested in could be a friend of
one of your professors or a fellow member
of the South Asian Bar Association.

Samuel:-

To those who want to emulate a legal

career such as yours, what advice do you
have for them?

Sunil:-

Seek out opportunities to practice human

rights law. If its not part of your day job, it
could mean, for example, volunteering with
the Law Union of Ontario or submitting a
paper to the Ontario Bar Association. Seek
out mentorship inside and outside your
office to refine your advocacy skills and
stay plugged into the human rights bar.

Share:- Aware that her parents fled warravaged Ethiopia two decades ago for
a better life in Canada, Hannah Godefa
pledged to make their transition to a new
environment worthwhile.
The elder of two siblings was recognized
for academic and community excellence
at the second annual Bikila Awards
celebration last Saturday night.
Godefa, who turns 18 next month and
was the second youngest recipient of
the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee
Medal, graduated this year with honours
from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School
in Thornhill and is attending an American
university.
Its really special to be recognized by my
community because so many individuals
here have mentored me, encouraged me
and supported me along the way, she said.
This is like everything coming together
and to be honoured by such an incredible
organization really means a lot.
She said some of the giants on whose
shoulders she stands are her parents,
Godefa Asegahagn and Tekla Alemayehu
and University of Oxford doctoral
candidate, Alpha Abebe, who attended the
awards ceremony.
My parents have always been there for
me and Alpha helped me orchestrate what
I wanted to do with my life, said Godefa,
who is the only Canadian high school
graduate this year to receive an invitation
to become a Robertson Scholar and receive
an undergraduate merit scholarship to
attend Duke University. This years class
of 32 comes from six countries and 15

American states.
The Robertson Scholars Leadership
Program invests in young leaders who strive
to make transformational contributions
to society. Scholars are selected based
on outstanding academic achievement,
intellectual curiosity, moral character,
purposeful leadership and collaborative
spirit.
Participants are entitled to full tuition,
room and board and mandatory fees for
four years of undergraduate studies in
addition to three summers of domestic and
international experiences.
Aspiring for higher education has not
prevented Godefa from engaging in
meaningful community service.
Two years ago, she was appointed a
UNICEF national ambassador for Ethiopia.
She has used that position to inspire young
girls to pursue their dreams and she
developed public service announcements
advocating for girls education in Ethiopia.
While I grew up in Canada, I have strong
ties to Ethiopia where I still have many
family members and I have visited on
several occasions, said Godefa, who is
also a child advocate for South Sudan. For
me, I want a world where happiness and
safety for children is not just a dream but
a reality.
Director and dramaturge, Weyni Mengesha,
was the recipient of a Professional
Excellence Award.
This is such a great honour, she said.

HAS ETHIOPIA REALLY ACHIEVED THE MDGS?

Written by J. Bonsa
On Sept.13, the BBC World Service aired
the first segment of a two-part documentary
entitled: Africa Surprising. As part of the
series, journalist Hugh Sykes reported
thatEthiopia has achieved a number of
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
ahead of schedule.
Ethiopia has long been praised for being
on track to meet most of the MDGs by
2015 if progress continues or the pace
increased. Earlier this year, the Horn of
Africa nation declared achieving a few of
the targets even before the end of 2015.
Sykes aim was to capture this exceptional
success story.
Unfortunately, the report illustrates the
Western medias sloppy and superficial
coverage of African success stories. At
least in Ethiopia, the much-celebrated
storyline does not actually exist on the
ground.
The BBC documentary
The most central and relevant part of the
broadcast is Sykes visit to a health center
in Ethiopias capital, Addis Ababa. It is
unclear how the BBC chose to profile
this particular site, but Ethiopians know
that such matters are typically handled by
the regime. Authorities pick a site, tidy
up everything and then let unsuspecting
visitors or journalists such as Sykes in at
their own convenience. As Sykes walked
around the clinic, he noticed that the
doctors and nurses greeted him with broad
smiles. Their exuberance looked too
unreal that Sykes had to ask why they were
smiling so much. They were so happy for
over achieving the MDGs ahead of time,
a health staffer murmured. Of course, they
had to smile, how else could they keep
their jobs and a straight face while talking
about a barely existent achievement?
It is startling that an astute journalist like
Sykes was not aware that the whole thing
was a setup. Ethiopias success stories are
often created by manufacturing data or
instructing project managers on how to
provide information to foreign journalists.
(In the case of journalists at the state-run
media, reporters are given instructions
on how to tell such stories.) In the BBC
documentary, the clinics staffers appear
a bit overzealous to the point of making
Sykes uncomfortable. He asks what
exactly they did to reach their targets ahead
of schedule. Among other things, they
recounted their work educating families
on the benefits of breastfeeding and family
planning. Incidentally, one of Ethiopias
MDG success stories is the reduction of
birth rates through a highly successful
and exemplary family planning scheme.
Little do reporters like Sykes or novice
Western researchers know that the
decrease in birth rate has nothing to do
with the governments family planning but
the excessive outmigration of large cohorts
of young women to the Middle East and
South Africa, among other places.

to study under a tree. These students are

taught by a government appointed teacher.

Importantly, the excessive outmigration
of Ethiopias youth is a reflection of dire
poverty, and failure to achieve the MDGs.
This outflow has intensified since the
MDGs were put in place. Despite this,
Sykes seems to nod, admire and move on.
Over the last ten years we achieved more
than what was achieved during the previous
century, Ethiopias Minister of Health,
told Skyes, an audacious and superfluous
claim that the journalist let stand.
The series wrapped up by paying lip
service to the truth: Sykes showed high
rise buildings within a few meters of slums
with shabby dwellings, rusty tin roofs
and muddy walls; executives with stylish
modern suits walking on the same streets
with bony beggars; SUVs shuffling along
with donkeys and goats on the streets, etc.
He then offered a faint reference to ruling
partys embarrassing declaration of 100
percent electoral victory in May, alluding to
a familiar storyline Ethiopias economic
rise despite a few governance hiccups here
and there.
The paradox of double-digit growth
Ethiopias so-called double-digit economic
growth brings to mind German politician
Joseph Goebbels propaganda principles:
If you tell a lie big enough and keep
repeating it, people will eventually come to
believe it. The lie can be maintained only
for such time as the State can shield the
people from the political, economic and/
or military consequences of the lie. It thus
becomes vitally important for the State to
use all of its powers to repress dissent, for
the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and
thus by extension, the truth is the greatest
enemy of the State.
The regime in Addis Ababa has ridden
Ethiopia of educated manpower so much
that the capacity to put numbers together
and generate sensible economic statistics
and estimate reasonable economic growth
rates has been grossly diminished over the
years. This is not a place to delve into the
niceties of GDP estimation and growth
rate calculations. By governments own
admission, almost all of the last five-year
Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP I)
targets have not been achieved, with all
large infrastructural projects stuck at their
early phases. However, the GDP growth
rates remained more or less at the level
forecast at the plans preparation stage. If
all economic activities have not reached
their goals as planned (in fact most lagged
behind anticipated targets), how did
Ethiopia somehow manage toachieve only
the MDG targets, before schedule at that?

ordinary
Ethiopians
irritated
and
uncomfortable? It is appropriate to provide
a broader background on the origins of the
MDGs.
Back in the 1980s, African governments
were told to adjust their economies to
market rules through structural adjustment
programs (SAPs). There was little to
no concern with poverty in the West.
Laissez-faire economics or economic
policy based on market rules was the order
of the day.
By mid-1990s, the failure of SAPs became
apparent, primarily because they gave rise
to widening gaps in income distribution
and propagation of poverty, particularly
in Sub-Saharan Africa. The International
Monetary Fund and the World Bank, who
promoted SAPs, were at one point even
referred to as Lords of Poverty. However,
rich western nations were behind these
multilateral agencies, arm-twisting leaders
of developing countries to adjust their
economies to the needs to the global
economy, a proxy for the economies of
the industrialized countries.
Western powers and their multilateral
agencies reluctantly acknowledged the
failure of laissez-faire economic policies
and replaced them with the MDGs
amid pressure from their progressive
constituents, presumably to redress the
damage caused to the developing countries
economies. MDGs were grouped into
sets of eight targets and handed over to
developing countries with a condition that
development aid would be strictly linked to
achievements of the MDGs.
Statistical lies
When the MDGs came into existence,
Ethiopias current rulers had already been in
power for more than ten years. The regime
immediately became a darling of the West
because of massive poverty, which led to
the outpouring of a substantial amount of
development aid over the last two decades.
The coupling of development aid with the
achievement of MDGs target has created
a precondition and breeding ground for
misreporting on achievements of those
targets.In dictatorial regimes like Ethiopia,
numbers related to achievements can
easily get churned out and systematically
built over the years.

In 2012 alone, an estimated 500,000

migrants, mostly young women, migrated
to the Middle East. At that rate, several
millions of female in fertile age group
have left the country in search of better
opportunities over the past few years. (The
2012 estimate doesnt include migration to
destinations other than the Middle East.)

The Ethiopian regime has often presented

itself as a key partner with the Western
powers. Geopolitical interest and the
excessive weight assigned to security
concerns mean authorities in Addis Ababa
could do anything and get away with it.
This has adversely affected scrutiny on
MDGs progress. No analyst or reporter
would dare to question records supplied
by officials in Addis Ababa. A journalist or
researcher, who tries to shed some doubt on
the credibility of official statistics, would
be harshly treated, including expulsion
with short notice or even physical attacks.
It is also abundantly clear that there is a
tacit understanding between the Ethiopian
government and the donor agencies not to
scrutinize Ethiopias record on MDGs to a
required extent. Donors need a foreign aid
success story. Besides, for fear of political
backlash from the general public, Western
leaders would not object to the success
story lines. It is in this scheme of things
that the Western media appear to be given
the role of generating the Ethiopia rising
or Africa Rising storylines to enhance
the feel good factor in donor countries.
The increasingly muzzled Ethiopian public
can do little more than helplessly watching
this drama being played out in the name of
poverty reduction.

From SAPs to MDGs

The distribution of income and wealth
are aspects of economic progress that are
most relevant to the MDGs. The widening
gulf between the haves and have-nots in
Ethiopia does not require a journalist or
any analyst to leave Addis Ababa. The
alarming increase in the number of beggars
in the streets and the exodus of unemployed
youth across deserts and high seas are
sufficient to inform any observer interested
in arriving at a balanced assessment. But

would scrutinize data accuracy and ensure

that the targets have genuinely been
achieved. That is the ideal scenario, but
we live in the real world, not in the ideal
world. In the real world, the required
level of scrutiny does not often come into
existence simply because it is costly to
setup and operationalize them. To begin
with, donors often assign inexperienced
and nave staff with skills unfit for the
purpose of managing large and complex
programs and projects. Additionally, donor
agencies and NGOs have a responsibility
to report back to their governments or fund
providers on implementations of programs
they are entrusted with. Therefore, it is not
in the interest of such agencies to report
program or project failures.

What makes it even more special is that

its coming from my community.
Born in Vancouver 37 years ago to
Ethiopian
immigrants,
Mengesha
moved to Toronto at age 16 and rose to
prominence on the Canadian theatrical
scene after directing Da Kink in my Hair
that boasted the highest ticket sales at the
Fringe Festival in 2001 and was nominated
for four Toronto Theatre Dora awards. She
also composed the Dora-nominated score.
Moving to Los Angeles four years ago,
she produced her first short film Hero,
Traitor, Patriot that recently played at
five film festivals and her first play created
in California, Bars & Measures, goes into
production next summer.
Mengesha is the mother of two young boys,
ages two-and-a-half years and six months.
Motherhood has taught me to keep things
in perspective, said the 2002 Harry
Jerome Award recipient. I used to worry
about the little things. I have always been
motivated to tell stories, but with my two
little boys and watching the world through
their eyes, its important that what they see
positively reflect who they are.
Mengesha directs the gripping political
thriller, Butcher, that opens later this month
and, with Mitchell Cushman, co-directs
Breath of Kings, which is a commissioned

two-part exploration of Shakespeares

four-play Henriad history cycle brought to
life by Graham Abbey. It will highlight the
2016 Stratford Festival.
Professional Excellence Awards were also
presented to former Ethiopian Tourism
minister, Habte Selassie Tafesse, who
played a key role in creating the Ethiopian
exhibit for Expo 67 in Montreal; Dr. Ingeda
Asfaw, who is the chief of cardiovascular
surgery at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit;
International Atomic Energy Agency
nuclear safeguards specialist, Mulugeta
Desta; McMaster University professor, Dr.
Joseph Beyene, who is the inaugural holder
of the John D. Cameron Chair in Genetic
Determinants of Chronic Diseases and
Vancouver-based artist, Yared Nigussu.
While this honour is overwhelming for
me, I hope it will inspire and empower
young artists to pursue their dreams, said
Ethiopia-born Nigussu, who spent three
years in France before coming to Canada.
Betel Yiberhu and Kalkidan Legesse were
recognized with scholarships and academic
excellence awards, while Gelila Ephrem
and Bekure Mekbib received awards
for scholarly excellence. The Ethiopian
Orthodox Tewahedo St. Marys Church
was honoured with a Community Service
Award.
Howard University film professor, Haile

Gerima, was the keynote speaker at the

awards ceremony.
Migrating to the United States in 1967 to
study at the Goodman School of Drama,
Gerima who is also an independent
filmmaker founded Mypheduh Film
Company in 1982 to distribute films made
by him and other filmmakers of African
descent.
Gerima, who has been at Howard since
1975, recently turned to crowdfunding to
raise $500,000 for his 12th film and eighth
dramatic narrative. Yetut Lij tells the story
of women and girls trafficked, exploited
and enslaved around the world.
The young people forced me to get into
this new phenomenon of crowdfunding,
said the 69-year-old who, with his wife,
co-owns Sankofa Video, Books & Caf in
Washington. It was an important exercise
in that I feel that African descendants can
use it as an alternative to respond to their
cultural needs.
The awards memorialize the legacy of the
late Abebe Bikila, who was the first Black
African athlete to capture an Olympic
medal. Running barefoot in Rome, he won
the marathon in a record time of 2:15:16.2.
For me and many Ethiopians, hes our
role model and the person we look up to

for inspiration, said Nigussu.

Successfully defending his title four years
later in Tokyo, Bikila was denied the hattrick at the 1968 Mexico City Games when
a right knee injury forced him to quit after
17 kilometres. His countryman, Mamo
Wolde, won the gold medal.
Ethiopians have dominated the Olympic
Games long-distance events.
While Gezahegne Abera was the last male
to win the Olympic marathon gold medal
15 years ago, Tiki Gelana is the defending
womens champion and Tirunesh Dibaba
has won the last two 10,000-metre events
and the 5,000-metre race in Beijing.
Meseret Defar was the 5,000-metre
womens champion in 2004 and 2012.
Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele
he secured the 5,000-metre gold medal
in 2008 combined to clinch five straight
10,000-metre gold medals before Somaliaborn Mo Farah, running for England, broke
the spell at the 2012 London Games.
Bekele holds the 5,000 and 10,000-metre
world records and sisters Genzebe and
Tirunesh Dibaba are the 1,500 and
5,000-metre global record holders.

in the rest of the world is considered. Thus, it
can be said that in Ethiopia where freedom of

Handwritten bulletins which address
the daily events of ancient Rome were the
earliest journalistic effort made in the first
century BC. Then, the first distributed news
bulletins appeared in China around 750 AD.
Germany, The Netherlands, and England
produced newsletters and news books of
different sizes in the 16th and 17th centuries.

By the early 18th century, politicians
had begun to recognize the enormous potential
of newspapers in shaping public opinion.
Consequently the journalism of the period
was largely political in nature; journalism was
considered as an adjunct of politics and each
political faction had its own newspaper. It
is also during this time struggle for freedom
of expression, which is immunity of the
communications media including newspapers,
books, magazines, radio, and television from
government control or censorship, began.

Ethiopia, in which freedom of
expression is guaranteed as the basic right in the
constitution, is among the leading countries in
the world in suppression of the rights to freedom
of expression and access to information. Many
private media are banned, and many journalists
fled their country and many others thrown to
prison only because they criticized the state
government. According to Human Rights
Watch, Ethiopia is the second country next to

Iran in the number of journalists in exile.

Journalism is a socially responsible profession,
serving the needs and interest of the society by
creating the necessary intelligence they need to
lead better lives. However, in Ethiopia most, if
not all, government journalists are the watchdogs
of the government rather than the public and
they are sanctioned by the government to be so.
Journalists with strong position to balance their
stories would be accused of having conspired
with the opposition and are usually labeled as
terrorists or anti-government and taken
to prison. In fact, even those who work as
watchdogs of the government lead their life in
conflict between their professional identity and
the situation.

Journalism in Ethiopia is not free
of political influence. This can be indicated
in the governments dominance of the media
ownership, the appointment of the media
managers from the ruling party, and the
imposition of restrictive media laws. The
governments clear aim is to ensure that media
promote and never criticize government
initiatives and policies.

As Human Rights Watch states the
Ethiopian government has accused more than
38 journalists with various crimes under the
Anti-Terrorism Proclamation since the 2010
election. Journalists who are known to write
critical articles face regular and intense pressure

expression is highly suppressed and journalists

WASHINGTON, DC - Mulugeta Lulle,

a veteran journalist and political analyst,
died October 4 at his home in Alexandria,

Mulugeta Lule was a contemporary of
the great novelists of the '70s, standing
tall among the iconic figures of the time:
Ba'alu Girma, Sebhat Gebregzabher,
Berhanu Zerihun, among others. Unlike
his colleagues, Mulugeta spent much
of his time in Ethiopia as a government
official. Before the change of regime in
1991, Mulugeta was general manager of
the influential Ethiopian Press Department,
the office which published the leading
newspapers of the country such as 'The
Ethiopian Herald', 'Addis Zemen' and
'Yezareitu Ethiopia.'

In 1991 when the EPRDF overthrew the

Mulugeta Lulle authored Atfeto Metfat, a
book that chronicles the failings of the Derg
military regime. Despite his experience as
a veteran journalist, Mulugeta was never
spared of being expelled from his job.
Yet after his departure from the Information
Ministry, Mulugeta and friends launched
Tobia, an Amharic magazine that would be
the darling of the public readership but a
bone in the throat of the ruling party.
Despite EPRDF's 'press freedom' rhetoric,
Tobia staffers suffered numerous setbacks
in the hands of the EPRDF regime. Editors
and reporters were spending much of their
time in courts, defending their cases that
either landed them in jail or exacted heavy
fines.
After an uphill battle, Mulugeta realized
that he had no chance of escaping arrest,
and went into exile in the United States.
Despite the hurdles of life for an immigrant,
Mulugeta had the time to write engaging
articles under the pen names of Tsegaye

Ethiopia: In Ethiopia, Drawn Out Zone 9 Trial

Serves to Further Punish Bloggers

By Endalk Chala

On Friday the Zone 9 bloggers are due to

appear in court in Ethiopia for the 39th time
since their arrest in April 2014. Endalk
Chala, a co-founder of the group which
is being honored with an International
Press Freedom Award from CPJ this
year, provides an overview of the drawn
out trial and finds that despite the delays
and setbacks, support for the bloggers is
unwavering.
Mr. A was close friends of one of the Zone
9 bloggers before six members of the group
were arrested. But since July last year,
when the bloggers were allowed visitors
in prison, he has become a close friend to
them all. The 28-year-old, referred to here
as Mr. A to protect his identity, says he used
to read their blogs with enthusiasm. He told
me that since the arrest of the bloggers,
Ethiopias budding online community has
effectively diminished to online trolling by
opposing factions.
To show solidarity for his friends and
their cause, Mr. A has been attending the
bloggers trial at Lideta High Court. The

Despite the heavy presence of security
personnel during the trial, Mr. A has
managed to attend the court proceedings
alongside other supporters, friends, and
family members.
Mr. A told me that for almost the entire
18 months of the trial he has not heard
the judges nor the prosecutor speak with
any certainty about the fate of his friends.
But Mr. A says he has never lost hope that
the presiding judges will clear his friends
of these fabricated charges. He said he
believes the judges will rule that writing
dissenting opinions, telling stories, and
using encryption for online communication
are not criminalized in the Ethiopian
constitution. But his hopes of being
reunited with his friends in Zone 9--the
name the bloggers use to refer to Ethiopia,
and which is derived from the eight zones
of Kality jail where political prisoners are
held--are starting to fade as weeks became
months, and months become a year. To
date, four of his friends have endured 38
adjournments with no apparent progress.

The number of acupuncture treatments you
need depends on the complexity of your
illness, whether it's a chronic or recent

for a recent wrist sprain, while a long-term
illness may require treatments for several
months to achieve good results.

Tigrai online misrepresentation of Neamin Zelekes

interview with VOA Setting the Record Straight

Ato Neamin Zelekes

By Engdu Wolde
Tigrai online has recently published an article
with an apparent objective of misrepresenting
the content of an interview conducted by the
VOA with Mr. Neamin Zeleke, Head of Foreign
Affairs of Patriotic Ginbot 7. The interview
came after a major political development in
Ethiopias recent history of popular resistance
when four opposition groups formed the United
Movement for the Salvation of Ethiopia through
Democracy (UMSED).
The Movement, formed by the Afar
Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front, the
Tigray Peoples Democratic Movement, Amhara
Democratic Forces Movement and Patriotic
Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy,
has a clear mission of ending tyranny in
Ethiopia using all possible means popular
resistance, including arms. The armed struggle
launched by the United Movement is gathering
momentum as Ethiopians at home and abroad
are expressing their support and demonstrating
their resolve to put an end to the oligarchy thats
now nearing a quarter of a century.
ESAT Special Radio Interview With Neamin
Zeleke (Must Listen)News of the formation
of the United Movement was welcomed with
elation and celebration among the majority of
freedom seeking Ethiopians both in Ethiopia
and the diaspora; on the contrary, however, the
likes of Tigrai online and its regular contributor,
Tsehaye Debalkew, have immediately taken
the task of misinforming the public. The article
entitled, Neamin Zeleke confirmed there is
a warm and cordial relation between G-7 and
the Eritrean government (Sep. 27, 2015), has
shamelessly described the United Movement as
a mere group that plant mines in Ethiopia.
Many readers might know the writer, Tsehaye
Debalkew, as an usher at the TPLF embassy
in Washington DC, a regular contributor to
anti Ethiopian and hatemonger websites like
Tigrai online, Aigaforum, and as a producer
of a weekly radio program funded by the
TPLF embassy to disseminate disinformation,
misinformation, and hateful propaganda
among the Ethiopian community living in the
Washington DC metropolitan area.
Tsehayes opportunistic and creepy modes
operandi since his days as a media executive
and representative of the Dergue at the Ministry
of Information of Ethiopia, as it was called then,
and his acrobatic sudden appearance as a stooge
for the TPLF controlled media both at home and
abroad is a subject for another article. Neither is
this short piece about unveiling the individuals
record of indecency, morally unacceptable
behaviors and his corrupt personality during
his time as a TPLF media executive in Ethiopia
before he came to the USA..
This article is therefore necessary to set the
record straight about the goal of the United
Movement by way of translating what actually
transpired during Mr. Neamins interview with
the VOA Amharic service vis-a-vis Tsehayes
misinforming piece on Tigray online.Ethiopians
everywhere have tuned to the VOA Amharic

interview with great interest and listeners of

the VOA were given the chance to call in and
ask their own questions, which Mr. Neamin
entertained genuinely and clearly. The goal
of Tsehayes article written in English was to
hoodwink, confuse and misinform non Amharic
speakers and foreigners who closely follow
political developments in Ethiopia; not to
mention that the writers move was an insult to
the intelligence of modern day critical audience.

said.

their rights are respected.

Mr. Neamin said in the VOA interview that the

Eritrean top leadership and the rank and file do
not even have the slightest resentment towards
Ethiopia and Ethiopians. The propaganda that
Eritrea does not want to see a stable Ethiopia
is waged by the TPLF in a futile attempt to stir
up confusion among the Ethiopian people and
Ethiopian opposition groups, he said.

One of the repeated cry and accusations by the

TPLF (its officials did not dare to face off Mr.
Neamin in the VOA interview) and its agents
in the Diaspora was that the United Movement
is operating under the command of the State
of Eritrea, to quote from Tsehayes article.
Mr. Neamin, however, clearly stated that the
government of Eritrea has never meddled in
the affairs of Ethiopian opposition groups.
According to Mr. Neamin, his organization has
been in consultation with the government of
Eritrea for over seven years and nowhere did
he see any meddling on the part of Eritrea. As
to the bogus reporting by some media outlet
that the Eritrean government is imprisoning
some members of Ethiopian armed groups,
Mr. Neamin said that they had thoroughly
investigated the allegations and found that the
imprisonment had only to do with disciplinary
actions taken by the respective opposition
groups and that the Eritrean government had
nothing to do with it. In all the cases, he said,
the imprisoned individuals had been found
violating organizational discipline or were
caught spying for the TPLF regime. Some of
the individuals came to Eritrea with a mission to
assassinate leaders of the Movement and some
were caught secretly turning over intelligence
to the TPLF.

The ultimate goal of the movement, according to

Mr. Neamin, is to free Ethiopia from the TPLF
despotic regime and create conditions necessary
for a genuinely democratic process. The
struggle is not about the use of Eritrean ports
or other strategic questions. These issues would
be negotiated with Eritrea once a democratic
government is put in place in Ethiopia. The
future engagement with Eritrea would be based
on mutual understanding and benefit to the
people on both sides of the border, who are have
a unique relationship, intermingled culturally
and historically.

Mr. Neamin abundantly made it clear in the

interview that the struggle is not with the people
of Ethiopia; neither is it with the Ethiopian army
which itself is the victim of TPLFs nepotism
and ethnic discrimination; an army whose top
commanders are almost all composed of TPLF
generals who hail from a minority ethnic group.
He said the struggle is between freedom fighters
and the oppressed people of Ethiopia on one
side and the TPLFs corrupt generals known
for their unbridled plunder, as well as few
beneficiaries of the cruel and corrupt oligarchy
on the other. The resistance movement does
not consider the Ethiopian army as an enemy.
The Movement believes that the rank and file of
Ethiopian army is a victim of the ethnocentric,
unjust, and corrupt regime,

As a stakeholder, he said, the Eritrean

government provides support as requested
and put forward constructive propositions.
The Eritrean government provides shelter
for the thousands of Ethiopian patriots who
joined the struggle as a result of the injustice,
discrimination and political persecution
in their home country. Currently, several
Ethiopian military officers, air force pilots
and patriots who escaped the devouring jaws
of TPLF freely move in Eritrea, and live in a
better condition than government officials of
the state of Eritrea themselves, according to
Mr. Neamin. Eritrea is the only country at the
moment that can be used as a shelter to tens of
thousands of persecuted Ethiopians. He said all
the other neighboring countries: Sudan, Kenya,
and Djibouti have been illegally and forcibly
extraditing people who were deemed dissidents
by the TPLF regime in Addis.
He said there is mutual respect and
understanding between Patriotic Ginbot 7
Movement and the Eritrean government. We
trust the Eritrean government, Mr. Neamin
underlined. UMSED members who have been
working in Eritrea have seen it to themselves
that Eritrea has become a safe place for
Ethiopian freedom fighters. The accusation by
some that Eritrean leaders directly influence or
command the Ethiopian opposition movement
in Eritrea is completely groundless.
The notion that the Eritrean government works
to destabilize Ethiopia as stated in the Tigrai
online article is utterly ridiculous. Patriotic
Ginbot 7 is a living witness that the Eritrean
government does not have any intention to
destabilize Ethiopia and meddle in the affairs
of Ethiopia. According to Mr. Neamin,
contrary to what those in the TPLF camp say,
Eritrean leaders like to see a democratic, stable,
and peaceful Ethiopia. Such attitude by the
Eritrean leaders would pave the way for a better
relationship between the peoples of the two
counties; which in turn facilitates the creation
of a prosperous and peaceful sub-region. he

Mr. Neamin pointed out that some distracters

have tried to divert the attention to the issue
of using Eritrean ports. He said that Patriotic
Ginbot 7 movement believes today is not the
time to talk about ports but to wage an all-out
struggle against the ethnocentric and dictatorial
oligarchy in Ethiopia. He however said that
once a democratic government is put in place
in Ethiopia, it is a possibility that Eritrea and
Ethiopia could even start to mull over federation
or confederation. He quoted Isaias Afeworki,
the Eritrean president, as saying the sky is the
limit as far as future relationship between the
two countries is concerned. All strategic issues,
however, would be discussed by the two sides
once the TPLF regime is removed and replaced
by a popular government that would have the
mandate of the Ethiopian people. Mr. Neamin
underlined that the movement does not have the
mandate to negotiate on behalf of Ethiopia at
the moment. The focus now, according to Mr.
Neamin, is to get rid of the tyranny in Ethiopia
and replace it with a democratic system that
respects fundamental freedoms, the rule of law,
and a system that allow citizens to live freely.
Responding to questions by the VOA and its
listeners as to why UMSED did not resolve
its differences with the TPLF through peace
and reconciliation, Mr. Neamin said the
TPLF should fist reconcile with the people up
on which it caused untold suffering. It should
release all political prisoners, create a favorable
environment for national reconciliation and
allow institutions that are pillars of democracy
to freely operate in the country. The regime
has to answer the democratic demands by the
people before any negotiations with opposition
forces. He said efforts by concerned Ethiopians
in the past 24 years to bring the regime to the
negotiation table have failed, thanks to the
leaders in the TPLF camp.
The TPLF has closed all doors for peaceful
resolution of political, economic and social
crisis in the nation. Mr. Neamin said the regime
had actually made a mockery of democratic
elections, declaring it had won 100% of the
vote even during the so called election, the
last election held in May of 2015. The regime
has closed all doors to a meaningful peaceful
struggle in Ethiopia as it wantonly imprisons
political opponents under trumped up charges,
tortures with impunity those in prison, , and
has created an almost impossible conditions to
wage a meaningful peaceful and legal struggle
in Ethiopia, he added. The only option left for
Ethiopians, according to Mr. Neamin, is to
remove the ethnocentric and unjust regime of
the TPLF through popular resistance and civil
disobedience. He said it is the wish of tens of
millions of Ethiopians to live in a country where

Mr. Neamin said in the interview that unlike the

misconception by some people, Tigrians are not
beneficiaries of the current government which
is solely controlled by few anti Ethiopians who
happen to hail from Tigray. The intention by
the regime operatives is to create fear among
the people of Tigray. The regimes officials are
trying to inculcate in the minds of the people
of Tigray a spurious notion that only TPLF
can protect them and their survival is at risk
if others take control of the government. Only
few Tigrian elites and their cronies from other
ethnic groups benefit from the corrupt and
tyrannical regime.
He called attention to listeners that one of
the armed groups that formed the United
Movement, the Tigray Peoples Democratic
Movement (TPDM), is formed and led by
compatriots from Tigray who had enough of
the oppression of the people of Tigray, whom
the regime claims to represent. Mr. Neamin
said the recent defection by one of the leaders
of the TPDM, Mola Asgedom, would not in
any way affect the Movement. He said Molla
represents neither the TPDM nor the oppressed
people of Tigray. The freedom fighters within
the TPDM, who hail from Tigray, have aligned
themselves with United Movement to bring
about democratic changes in Ethiopia. The fight
has never been with the people of Tigray.
Further giving details on Mollas defection, Mr.
Neamin said Molla had tricked the freedom
fighters of TPDM saying they would be going
to celebrate Ethiopias New Years Eve. He then
crossed the border with Sudan with few of his
confidants who already had knowledge of his
intention; while other soldiers who were caught
by surprise had decided to return to Eritrea once
they knew about Mollas deception.
Answering to a question whether a group
that comes to power through armed struggle
would guarantee democracy in the country, Mr.
Neamin, who recalled that past governments
that took government power by force have
dashed the peoples hope for a better Ethiopia,
reiterated that the goal of the United Movement
is never to gain control of political power in
Ethiopia. He said the goal of the Movement is
to first do away with the dictatorial regime by
all available means and then create conditions
necessary for the country to have an orderly
and peaceful transition to a constitutionally
liberal democratic system where the people
would elect their government in a free, fair, and
democratic process. The struggle is to make
this the TPLF/EPRDF regime the last autocratic
government in Ethiopia.
