RAPE CASES IN

THE
PHILIPPINES
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
• Rape is an illegal sexual activity, most commonly involving sexual intercourse, against
the will of the victim through force or the threat of force or against a person who is
unable to give legal consent due to minor status, mental disorder, mental disability,
addiction, unconsciousness, or deceit. The offense of rape has been subsumed into
that of sexual harassment in many jurisdictions. Rape was long considered to be
caused by unbridled sexual desire, but it is now understood as a pathological assertion
of power over a victim. (Barstow, 2020)

• Rape is an unlawful sexual activity and usually, sexual intercourse carried out forcibly
or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is
beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent. (Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary,
n.d.)

• As for us the authors, rape is a heinous crime that is punishable by law and it usually
involves sexual intercourse, once a person is forced to engage in such an activity, rape
is automatically performed.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• Sexual violence has long been a barbaric aspect of the human narrative, from the
texts of ancient Greece to the Bible and the letters of early explorers. (When
Sexual Assaults Made History, 2018)

• The most notorious rape and slay cases that shocked the Philippines includes
Lucia Lulu Murder in 1967, The Jalosjos Case in 1996, The Chiong Murders in 1997,
Vizconde Massacre in 1991, The Silawan Rape Case in 2019. ( Limos, 2019)

• In the Philippines, every year, the number of rape cases in the country continually
increases. Based on police records cited by the Center for Women’s Resource in
2017, one person is raped in the Philippines every hour.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
In 2014, the rape rate in
the Philippines was ten
cases per 100,000
population. The rape
cases have been
growing throughout the
years, with an average
annual rate of 19.08
percent since 2005. The
statistics show that in
2003 there is a 3.7
percent rape rate in the
Philippines, while in
2014, there is 10 percent
of it. (Sanchez, 2020)

SIGNIFICANCE OF DISCUSSING
THE PROBLEM
This paper expounds that the cases of rape exist and are still existing. This gives
relevant information about this violent act that despite the existing Anti-rape Law of
1997 or the R.A 8353, rape remains to be an occurring problem in our country,
Philippines. This paper also serves as an eye opener to the readers.

The importance of discussing rape as a problem are:

• To spread awareness that rape can happen anywhere and anytime to anyone.
• To educate people of its effects and occurrence.
• To possibly put an end to this problem and;
• To lessen the number of victims and cases of rape
THESIS STATEMENT
Our moral dilemma highlights the increasing number of rape cases that are
happening in our country, which was led by the loss of three moral values: respect,
compassion, and discipline.
FIRST LOST MORAL VALUE: RESPECT
According to Baggerr (2014), respect is being treated or
treating an individual in dignified manner.

This violent act proves the rapist do not respect the decisions
and choices of others, the feelings of others, their bodies and
the life of any beings.

According to Salazar (2018) Disrespect is a very influential

thing that could lead to violence.
PROOFS TO THE LOSS OF RESPECT
This are the proofs of the loss of respect:

• The Date Rape case of Stacey Gutierrez

• Taxi driver who raped a drunk woman who partied

in BGC.

• Drunk man caught raping a dog in Cebu

SECOND LOST MORAL VALUE:
COMPASSION
Compassion is a considerate understanding of the agony of
others and a desire to relieve it (Merriam-Webster Dictionary,
n.d.)
PROOFS TO THE LOSS OF
COMPASSION
• Eileen Sarmenta rape case

• The Vizconde Massacre

• ABS-CBN talent rape case

THIRD LOST MORAL VALUE:
DISCIPLINE
Discipline is defined as the quality of being able to behave
and work in a controlled way, which involves obeying
particular rules or standards. (Collins Dictionary, n.d.)
PROOFS TO THE LOSS OF
DISCIPLINE
• Jalosjos Case

• Maggie de la Riva story

• The powerful exhibit of “Don’t tell me how to dress” that

displays different kinds of garments from the victims of
sexual violence
