(1) An inability to learn that cannot be


explained by intellectual, sensory, or health
factors.

(2) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory


interpersonal relationships with peers and
teachers.

(3) Inappropriate types of behavior or feelings


under normal circumstances.

(4) A general pervasive mood of


unhappiness or depression.

(5) A tendency to develop physical


symptoms or fears associated with personal
or school problems.
Students with EBD

 Students with persistent and


consistent emotional or behavioral
responses that adversely affect
performance in the educational
environment

depression, schizophrenia
dangerously aggressive towards
others;
self- destructive
severely withdrawn
depressed and
 noncommunicative
 Other Characteristics:

> hyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness)

> Aggression/self-injurious behavior

> withdrawal (retreat from social interaction, failure


to initiate interaction, excessive fear or anxiety)

> immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper


tantrums, poor coping skills)

> learning difficulties

> abnormal mood swings


 CAUSES not yet determined but
heredity, brain disorder, diet, stress
and family functioning can be
possible factors
Characterized by the frequent occurrence of any of at
least four of the following behaviors:

 losing temper, being angry and resentful


 arguing with adults
 stubborness to compromise with adults and peers
 actively defying or refusing to comply with
requests or rules of adults
 deliberately doing things that annoy other people
failing to accept responsibility
easily annoyed or irritated
 being spiteful or vindictive
Specific skills are taught through:

 Verbal instruction
 Modeling
 Role-playing with the child
 Videotaping the role-playing
 Continued coaching and discussing
 Reinforcement of the skill in a natural
setting
